1. Didn't they just toss out the Cons?
What happened? I spoke with one person from there and he pointed out that our Left Wing is further to the Right than their Left leaning pols.

2. Sadly No the Consv won a Super-Majority (in American speak) so they can do ANYTHING for 4 years

In Canadian speak they have majority government rule which is equivalent to owning fillibuster-proof majorities in both chambers of Congress and control of the Whitehouse. And like Republicans the Canadian Conservatives follow lock-step when given marching orders...so whatever they want to do they can and will.

Yes, it is very strange why Canada decided to do this but it seems Canadians are itching to become more liek US by shifting from its traditional Liberal beliefs to a Conservative one. It seems most societies tend to do this because as a society gets more comfortable with what they have they get greedy and want more and when thaty happens they tend to vote Conservative for the sake of short-term gain, not looking to the long term consequences.

And yes, the Democrats are further to the Right than the Left is in Canada. More specifically, our right-leaning Conservatives are equivalent to your Democrats. But inch-by-inch our Conservatives are trying to move Canada more and more right and are doing so very successfully. They plan to rewrite and remove a law that prevents news from lying...this is why Fox News is not allowed to set up shop and broadcast Canadian news....to do so all news outlets must be honest and cant lie. The conservatives want (and now can) remove this law and allow Fox News to enter Canada so as to instill fear in Canadians and allow our country to move more right at a faster pace.

4. Because Big Money and Fear supersede Calm Logic
and--given Our US efforts to control the message, A) I doubt they fully see what went wrong here and B) the pols there apparently as good as the RW is here in the same way We here are repeatedly duped into voting against our own best interests.

Do I have that close to being right?

5. When the center spends all its time fighting the left
the right wins. Thats what happened in Canada. take 3 parties, subtract instant runoff voting, and end up with results best suiting a minority of voters.

6. We're not all stupid...
...just the 39% that voted for Harper. It pains me what Harper has planned for Canada over the next four years. Don't believe what anyone tells you, Harper is just as right wing as Republicans are. He would privatize healthcare in a minute if felt he could get away with it. His new budget cuts corporate tax rates and slices and dices our social programs -- same old tired, failed strategy.

7. Of course I didn't mean to imply
that 'all' Canadians were stupid. Sorry.

But, considering the huge example to the South of you.......I cannot express just how disappointed I am. I wrongly imagined Canada to be an island of good sense in a sea of stupid. But I do understand with enough money and effort the right wing can influence the direction in any system. But Canadians had better become aware of this danger, and soon.

To win it all 'the right' simply has to remove the restrictions on lying in the media. Unsuspecting Canadians simply won't be ready for the massive misinformation assault that will be waged against their interests. You can take that to the bank.

9. Bet the NDP douchebags aren't feeling so full of themselves now...
Edited on Sat Jun-25-11 06:13 AM by Sen. Walter Sobchak
Having delivered Harper his coveted majority with a big orange bow on it.

Then again, they probably are and still celebrating taking down the liberals while their newly elected MP's look at condos in Byward Market and haunt Ottawa area BMW and Lexus dealers.

What happened in the Canadian election that just occurred is "poutrage" taken to its most ridiculous end. Unreachable bomb throwers in the NDP set about destroying the Liberals instead of setting about building a coalition government with them that would have deprived Harper. And while the NDP has formed the official opposition they have no power and have given Harper a blank check... pardon me cheque for his ideological rampage.

Their victory is hollow but the costs unthinkable. By the time Harper is done with Canada it will be in the same league as Iceland and Greece and presumably in the next election the NDP platform will be centered around bike-lanes on the trans-canada highway and whatever other downtown Toronto minutia catches their fancy.
