California actually has a law on that subject:

California Penal Code Section 830.10

Any uniformed peace officer shall wear a badge, nameplate,
or other device which bears clearly on its face the identification
number or name of the officer.

7. I don't understand, why would this upstanding servant of the people want to hide his name? He should

be a proud "peace" officer, proud to share his name with those of us who pay his salary and expect him to not only enforce the law, but obey it as well. What reason, other than a nefarious one, could an officer of the law have for covering up their name and or badge number? I just don't get it. Sarcasm Alert!
