Black Rook to White Queen
Yes it is an overused and now tired cliche.

But the President's renewed call to a bipartisan and even patriotic approach to solving big problems is an absolutely masterful stroke.

Either the Republicans will respond and meet halfway on some key legislation, like cap and trade, or they will not and they will be forced into an increasingly small corner.

Now if the Republicans show some bipartisan spirit it will only intensify anger from their Teabagger rebellion that is already showing inroads on taking on established Republicans including the bizarre right wing attack on Senator McCain and his primary challenge.

If the Republicans do not respond with some obvious signs of cooperation they will completely lose the independents.

The call to foster a common bipartisan dialogue will not be understood by the far, far left as they would rather celebrate a glorious defeat and uphold an escoteric principle than to make substantial progress in solving a real problem with a solution that involves answers outside our chatechism and would actually share credit with those outside a narrow circle.

And this too helps the President. Ironically those loud irrational belligerent voices from the folks that beat their brest and draw inspiration from WSWS or from the 'Professional' screetches from people who have become reflexive critics of everything that the US does, actually frames the President as a more centrist leader, which he clearly is not.

That White King isn't looking to safe there.

2. I think it was masterful too..
He has to address the elephants in the room and calling them to honor their country and their citizens has to be done.

Like mitch mcconnell said..it was in your face ..to the republicons. Too bad their actions have to prompt the President of the United States to act like their daddy.

3. Yep. I think we saw him at his very best tonight - I was
apprehensive (partially due to the hatefest on GD and GD/P, to be quite candid) and thought he might be contrite and passive.

I should have known better.

He basically kicked EVERYONE in the ass tonight. Brilliant.

4. Oh yes indeed. It made for some pleasant viewing, including the lovely shout-out to the Supremes!
"With all due respect for the separation of powers..."

5. Good one GC. Unfortunately, my cable went out for about 2 whole hrs.
I'm hoping I can find a repeat somewhere. The cable is back now, but I'm wondering if I should try and catch the recaps by "the punditry"? Or if I should just forego the backseat analysis from the talking heads.

8. Thank you Cha. I knew someone would know. I'm not into conspiracy theories, but
I couldn't believe about 5 minutes into the speech, the cable goes out? I'm in Red State hell, so I get suspicious. Thanks for the heads up.

9. PBS had great coverage.
I watched it live on C-span, but then watched a repeat on a special edition of Newshour. But my dumb local PBS affiliate did not show it live! Instead, they did show it at Newshour's regular repeat-play time slot. Their camerawork was better, they put labels on people so you'd know who was who, and Jim Lehrer gave a narration of what was going on that was not intrusive before and after the speech. That's the copy I'm saving on my DVR.

I'm kinda glad I skipped the MSNBC-fest, actually. Especially hearing about what Matthews said!
