1. It is not a big thing but, I do think we need to get a handle on it.

I just feel that we need to get a handle on our borders. I don't mind some illegals but, with the country seeming like it is coming here because their economic state is so bad, we have to stop the bleeding, get serious in helping mexico to do away with the class system and get the country to optimize it's resources and develop jobs and education for all.
I feel that is the key to the problem. Big business wants all illegals over here to throw the working americans out or depress wages totally and they want unlimited work visas as well.
We must kick the corporations butt and mexico's in it's long out dated midevil system and allowing the people to starve so they leave.

2. This disconnect I find interesting

Because the right wing is obsessed with the bill, and really, despite votes, it seems like it's barely on our radar screen.

4. There is no immigration bill that can work. What people say they want is a return to the time

before illegals grew to 12 million strong. That will never happen. What business wants is a cheap labor force. What congress wants is the problem to go away. Well business has a cheap labor force and the problem will never go away because there can be no bill that will give the majority what it wants.

This will be like the weather. We talk and talk but nothing can be done.

5. Well, it pertains to my job and it's a personal issue to me

so I care about it a lot. Something must be done, not just about illegal immigration, but also about legal immigration. Even the most qualified foreign individuals are left to struggle with enormous year-long waits for green cards. These are people who contribute immensely - economically, culturally and financially - to the fabric of this society.

6. Bush really wants this bill passed

For one reason: this bill only benefits employers that want to exploit workers.

I think the Democrat that are pushing it through for him have lost their minds. Why would the Democrats push it through? The republican base hate this bill. They are keeping most republicans from voting for it.

I am a little amazed that so many DUers think it is a wonderful bill. The democratic congress people need to wash their hands of this and wait until we have a Democratic president in office to tackle the issue.

why on earth would the Democratic congress do favors for Bush? Have they gone mad?

What really upsets me is this bill stinks. It is in the best interest of employers who do not want to pay even minimum wage. So why are Democrats backing it? Lobbyists? Campaign contributions? There has to be a reason.

I think a lot of people on DU like it because the republican base is so upset by it. In this case, the republican conservative base is right. The neo-con Bush administration is wrong.

14. I don't agree

On a few grounds. While the Republican Base is rejecting this bill, what they want is a lot worse. They certainly aren't in favor of turning a blind eye to the immigrants.

I also don't know that ulterior motives are necessarily the explanation. Draining that many workers out of the economy at one swoop does raise economic questions.

9. To me it is a red herring issue

No one cared about it for 20 years. What difference does it make if there are undocumented workers mowing lawns and washing dishes?

Really.

Who cares?

Not me.

If they sneak across the border and find jobs that they are willing to do, then good for them. Hooray. Welcome to America. To me, if they hold a steady job for 1 year, they ARE citizens. Give them a test and an ID card and move on.

13. I'm OK with H1B visas, as long as jobs are held open for Americans

first for a fair period of time. We need to keep our tech/business edge on our own shores.

... you'd understand the necessity for work visas.
