Democratic Underground Needs YOU!
It's that time again - Democratic Underground is switching moderators. And we need YOUR help!

DEMOCRATIC UNDERGROUND SITE MODERATOR

POSITION TYPE
  • Part-time volunteer
REQUIREMENTS
  • An unswerving dedication to fair play
  • The ability to work well with others
  • Good communication skills
BENEFITS
  • Flexible work schedule
  • Unlimited access to the moderator hot tub
  • Free pictures of donuts on Fridays
Our moderators are a fantastic group of people - they freely volunteer their time and effort to keep the site running smoothly, and it's fair to say that Democratic Underground would not be able to exist without their assistance. If you would like to become part of the team for the next three months, read on.

Read this message carefully, it has changed since the last time it was posted. Failure to properly follow application instructions will disqualify you to serve as a moderator.

The next moderator term will last three months, from the end of June until the end of September.

Here are some things to bear in mind before you apply:
  • Your political ideology is not important... We need centrists and leftists and everyone in between to serve as moderators.

  • We prefer people who have been members for a while, and have made at least a few hundred posts. You must be at least 18 years old. You must have donated at least one time to Democratic Underground using your own name.

  • You must be able to log on to DU regularly, and should not take any long vacations between now and the end of the term.

  • We prefer people with a generally positive outlook on life, who can be fair and evenhanded, and who don't get easily frustrated. If you sign up to moderate, we expect you to stay as a moderator for the full term. You must understand that it is perfectly normal for the admins to occasionally overturn your decisions, or to make specific requests regarding the manner in which you participate on DU while you are a moderator.

  • We prefer that moderators avoid highly controversial topics, or at least moderate their behavior significantly when participating in such discussions. If you have a history of rhetorically hot postings on controversial issues, we may not choose you to serve.

  • If you know that you aren't very good at controlling your behavior or your emotions, or if you know that you can't be fair to a particular group of people, please do not sign up to be a moderator. There is no obligation to serve as a mod, and we won't hold it against you if you choose not to.

  • Because primary season is drawing ever closer we are asking all of our moderators to tell us their candidate preferences for the Democratic presidential nomination, so we can try to plan a balanced team. If you do not have a candidate preference, or if you prefer more than one candidate, just say so on your application. You are not required to choose a candidate in order to be selected to serve as a moderator.
HOW TO APPLY

STEP 1: FILL OUT, SIGN, AND SNAIL MAIL THE MODERATOR CONFIDENTIALITY AGREEMENT

IMPORTANT! If you mailed us the form before, you might need to mail it again. The form was last updated on August 26, 2005; we need this most recent version from all of our moderators.

The moderator confidentiality agreement is here:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/forums/moderator_form.html

Double-check to make sure the page says "Updated August 26, 2005." That way you will know that you are looking at the correct form. If it doesn't say that, click reload/refresh on your browser to reload the page.

Fill it out and send it in to the address provided ASAP. We hope to receive completed forms from all applicants *before* the new moderator term begins. If we do not receive your form before the term begins, you may still be selected to serve as a moderator but you will not immediately gain access to the moderator forum.

We will keep the moderator confidentiality agreement forms on file in our office, so once you mail us the form you should not have to send it again if you apply to serve in future terms.

STEP 2: SEND US AN APPLICATION EMAIL WITH THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION

Send an email to earlg@democraticunderground.com with the word "moderator" in the subject line. By volunteering to serve as a moderator, you are giving us permission to take all necessary measures to verify your identity. Include the following information:
  • Your real name

  • Your forum username

  • Your address

  • Your telephone number

  • How much time you spend on Democratic Underground

  • Which forums you'd like to moderate, or would not like to moderate (if you have a preference)

  • A brief statement which generally outlines your political views

  • Your preferred candidate or candidates for the Democratic presidential nomination (if you have a preference)

  • Are you taking any extended vacations during the the next three months?

  • Have you read, and do you agree to follow, the Message Board Rules and the Moderator Guidelines?

  • Have you filled out, signed, and mailed the Moderator Confidentiality Agreement (Updated August 26, 2005)?
If you apply but are not selected this time, please don't be offended. We typically have a fairly large number of applicants, and we obviously can't pick everyone who applies.

We hope to select a new group of moderators on Tuesday, June 26, 2007. There will be a free conference call for the new moderators on the following night.

4. Hey Mods - here is my questions
One: how much will I be paid?? (Anything more than a thou a week is acceptable - though lesser amounts MAY be considered)

Two: I am seriously considering devoting time to this. But here is my special short bus question: I work usually from Friday night to Monday morning. No computer access during that time. Is it possible to be of assistance if I can only volunteer between say, mid Tuesdays through late Thursday nights?
(However, if you are paying a thousand a week - I guess I CAN quit my day job and devote my resources exclusively to you.)

We ask that mods try to log in at least once a day, although they're not required to. If you're only able to get online three days a week, it might be a bit tough to do the work.

16. IIRC and unless things have changed there are no 'shifts'
you log on when you can and work the time you have available. It's kinda when ever for as long as you are able (or comfortable) spending.

It is totally up to you and very flexible.

You should try it sfex, it will change the way you view DU for sure :hi:

although it's not a requirement. People who are selected to be mods tend to be people who spend a lot of time on DU anyway, so it's not usually a problem. There are no official shifts, mods just log in when they can.

33. Sorry it was a flippant post.
Sorry for the post as I consider it a flippant off-hand comment at the moment as a comment to the thread.

Myself....I'm not a strong political party loyalist. I tend to be independent politically and that means I don't blindly support parties per se, although in the last 6 years I have leaned very heavily Democratic. At first I thought I would apply as I consider myself quite fair and objective, but at second thought I'll pass. Existing mods do a fantastic job.

39. I respectfully submit that many of the 'long term' moderators
be replaced. Why should anyone be a mod for a year or more? Every 3 or 4 months, some know they will never be replaced and their 'power' just keeps growing and growing. Is that for the good of DU? I think not.

It's not that you don't have the volunteers. I'm not going to name 'names' but if you want to PM me, I'll tell you who needs to be replaced.

53. I Disagree With The Concept Of 'Term Limits'.
If anyone who meets the criteria wants to provide the valuable service of being a mod here, regardless of how many times they've done so before, they should be allowed that opportunity based on their merits. If a mod is acting inappropriately or unfairly, which I doubt, then I'm sure the admins would take due action whether the person had been a 1st time mod or 100 time mod. If that hasn't happened, then I'd wager it's far more due to your perceptions of the mod fairness being wrong then it would be due to actual 'growing power'.

I could only agree with your concept if there was a waiting list to be a mod and some never were able to get the opportunity due to the spots never becoming vacant. Since that isn't the case, and the opportunity is available to anyone, I fail to see how longetivity of holding the post should be a detriment towards somebody.

62. Questions
Can a moderator's job be done from a computer other than his/her home computer? I don't mean done from work computer....for example, if "extended vacation" will be taken at someone else's house, with access to their computer, is this allowed? Or, do you have to log in with your home "unique" IP address?

Who moderates the late nights? Are there mods who have to check in during the wee hours of the morning when trolls can do damage because most everyone is sleeping?

I think I could do this and contribute to DU, which has meant so much to me over the years, but live in mandatory-evacuation hurricane zone, so my service might have to be interruped a few times. Hmm, better wait until the next 3 months' cattle call!

63. You can log on with any computer
As far as late nights go, there tends to be very little activity at night and thus very little need for moderators at that hour. Essentially moderators log on whenever they can. I logged on late at night last year when I was a mod, but that was by personal choice. The only other mod that was usually on during the wee hours was Heidi, who doesn't live in the United States. But basically, the forum probably would've been okay had we not been on during those hours.

I live in a hurricane-prone area as well and honestly I wouldn't let it stop you from applying.

64. You can log on from any computer, but, if it's not your home
computer, you need to log off at that site.

Late nights etc, are relatively easy, since there are people from all over the place, and many nightowls as well...:)

Emergencies happen, that is a prt of life...:)
