We absolutely should not be interfering in internal Palestinian affairs. Have we learned NOTHING from history? How many times have we backed one group over another, only to have that decision bite us in the ass afterwards? Regardless of what we think about Hamas, they were elected by the Palestinian people. We can't say that we want democracy around the globe, then turn around and try to subvert the results. Wanna know why there is so much hatred towards the US among the Arab world? It's because of bullshit like this - trying to get involved in local affairs, without really giving a damned about the past histories or possible consequences of such actions. They don't hate us because of our freedom, they hate us because of our imperialistic attitude. It's the notion that Americans know what's good for the Palestinians more than they do. I swear, reading some of the responses I've seen so far today makes me think I'm on a goddamned freeper board - stuff like "Carter was a good person, bad president" is almost verbatim what I've heard from many a repug.
There is a legitimate role for the United States in the Middle East, however. Our role should be one of a mediator - trying to get warring sides together and hashing out their differences. I seem to recall that Jimmy Carter did a pretty damned good job of this. Maybe he knew what he was doing after all. Seems like a hell of a much better idea than picking sides in a civil war.
