Bush tried to kill my daughter
Not much of an exaggeration. He just vetoed the stem cell research bill. She is 10 years old and has been diabetic since she was 6. Stem cell research is the only realistic chance for a cure. Type 1 diabetics live 7 years less than the average, and often are in very poor health and with considerable pain by middle age. Something like this makes politics very, very personal.

1. Does this make it the second or third time?
I feel your pain. My step-son will probably die 20+ years earlier than he normally would because of a disease he has that might be cured or controlled, or halted, with research. It's tragic that a few people can do so much harm to so many.

Vote in Senate was 63-34 with Johnson (a likely yea, but still recovering), Landrieu,--also a likely yea, and Dodd of SD (likely yea), all Democrats, not voting. Obviously there were a lot of Rs who voted yeah--even McCain.

Uphill battle, but considering voters overwhelmingly approve of SCR, it could happen.

Edit: I keep typing in Nelson for Dodd, I have no idea why. Sorry for the bad 411.

22. Could that really happen?
Damn, but I'd love to see one of the spoiled brat's evil plans foiled, and this would be on one of the best issues.

26. I think a few vulnerable R incumbents could be persuaded by their
Senate fellows as the election draws near. I don't see any chance of swinging Casey or Nelson, though.

It would be very sweet indeed, and would restore my belief that some in politics really do care about the country.

Ever the optimist, me.

14. Who CARES? Are you paying any freaking attention? Does the word "Iran" mean anything
to you?

Do you know what the Constitution is? Who is "protecting" it on SCOTUS?

And hell, yes, I care about stem-cell research. Millions of people do.

8. My son too. He has a genetic, auto-immune linked kidney disease.
Needs dialysis & a transplant to live.

Stem cell research might be able to do something about his kidney disease, but we'll never know, will we?

I hate these MFers. Why isn't it THEIR kid that suffers?

9. I don't mean to defend the bastard, but there's still a lot of private money
going into this research, and states are picking up some of the slack so it's not quite true to say that all hope is lost :)

12. that is a good point
There is still a lot of private research and govt research in other countries. But if you think about things like polio, TB, etc, most of the really bad diseases had massive govt research programs in the US. They can spend millions on telling teenagers not to have sex, billions on corporate giveaways and subsidies, and trillions on an immoral war, but a handful of nuts from the Christian Coalition can keep them from potentially saving thousands of lives. The more I type the madder I'm getting.

15. Yes, private $$ doesn't approach the magnitude of gov't $$ in medical research.
The scale of one against the other makes them incomparable.

And given that the US is the largest medical research economy in the world (in terms of $$ potentially available), the financial keys to eradicating diseases are held in the hands of our government.

Which is currently using our $$ to kill people around the globe.
And here at home, it seems, as well.

And on Reps in general ~ if it ain't about sex, it ain't about morality in their teeny tiny minds.

Very, very early onset disease, very, very young patients--it's really no help at all to much of anyone.

It just makes a lovely diversion.

I don't know what you are trying to get at. I'm just trying to post this for the poster of this thread. If my kid had type 1 diabetes, I'd try to get them in on a trial like this.

23. I read it a bit differently.
While I certainly agree it doesn't portray a viable treatment for the vast majority of patients, it does strongly suggest that there's a potential for treatment or cure discoverable with stem cell research. So, I regard it as damning of the funds prohibitions.

What I regard as most despicable is the liklihood I see that pharaceutical companies see this path of research as a threat to their "rice bowls." That's ghoulish in the extreme, imho.
