Looking to Debunk the "Clinton Could Have Had Bin Laden"argument.
Edited on Wed Jun-20-07 06:00 PM by romantico
There was a famous CNN article back in 1996, but I am trying to debate this book called LOSING BIN LADEN where they claim Clinton should have taken care of Bin Laden. Thought even Snopes debunked this.Any links would be helpful.Thanks!

2. its in the 9/11 Commission Report
Edited on Wed Jun-20-07 05:55 PM by LSK
In late 1995, when Bin Ladin was still in Sudan, the State Department and the CIA learned that Sudanese officials were discussing with the Saudi government the possibility of expelling Bin Ladin. U.S. Ambassador Timothy Carney encouraged the Sudanese to pursue this course. The Saudis, however, did not want Bin Ladin, giving as their reason their revocation of his citizenship.6

Sudan's minister of defense, Fatih Erwa, has claimed that Sudan offered to hand Bin Ladin over to the United States. The Commission has found no credible evidence that this was so. Ambassador Carney had instructions only to push the Sudanese to expel Bin Ladin. Ambassador Carney had no legal basis to ask for more from the Sudanese since, at the time, there was no indictment out-standing.7

11.  why? bush could have had him at tora bora and couldn't be arsed
hard to arrest someone for 911 during the clinton administration, 911 quite famously occurred on sept 11 2001

we need to stop raising dead winger talking points and focus on reality a little more

13. From Wiki:
Sudanese officials, whose government was under international sanctions, offered to expel Osama bin Laden to Saudi Arabia in the mid-1990s provided that the Saudis pardon him. The Saudis refused because they had already revoked his citizenship and would not accept him in their country.<51> Consequently, in May 1996, under increasing pressure from Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the United States, Sudan asked bin Laden to leave and he returned to Afghanistan. He chartered a plane and flew to Kabul before settling in Jalalabad after being invited by Abdul Rasul Sayyaf, leader of the Islamic Union for the Liberation of Afghanistan, a member of the Afghan Northern Alliance.

snip -

In response to the 1998 United States embassy bombings following the fatwa, President Bill Clinton ordered a freeze on assets that could be linked to bin Laden. Clinton also signed an executive order, authorizing bin Laden's arrest or assassination. In August 1998, the U.S. launched an attack using cruise missiles. The attack failed to harm bin Laden but killed 19 other people.<59>

I seem to recall a lot of "wag-the-dog" talk after the cruise missile attack. The Republicans were claiming that Clinton did it to divert attention from Monica.

CIA Interview: We Had bin Laden CORNERED-Washington REFUSED TO HELP

<snip>
2 CIA officials tell us Washington –twice– declined to send the reinforcements they asked for when bin Laden was cornered in Afghanistan in 2001. By the time of the 2nd request by the CIA for troops, the special ops force could hear Osama on radio asking his followers for forgiveness for leading them to their imminent capture. It was that close.
<end>

BushCo wants this buried deep and forgotten..... we will NEVER forget.
