Edited on Fri Jun-29-07 08:27 AM by LeftishBrit
who would need to be confirmed by Congress, I think.

At least, that's what Nixon had to do when Agnew resigned.

And BTW, it would be a worldwide, not just nation-wide, celebration!

Any VP nominee would need to be confirmed by the Senate, where our hold is tenuous even at the best of times.

So sayeth the 25th Amendment. And our hold on the House is far from tenuous.

21. If situation were reversed, Republicans would already be shouting out for Repub to be named.
I think Democrats analyse to much and act too little. The right never let the liklihood of defeat keep them from championing their cause. They knew Clinton would not be convicted in Senate but they impeached anyway. I think we defeat ourselves.

10. I don't know
I think we are already in the election cycle - it seems like it would be hard for them to get a new guy as VP who could then run for President.

36. If he likes her boots, how come he's always knockin' em?
Seriously, I don't think they'd go with Rice. She may or may not be Bush's arm candy, but she is the Republican Party's window dressing. Bush would probably want to nominate her, but methinks Poppy would intervene again. Cheney leaving would mean they're in full meltdown mode. When that happens, they don't let Junior call the shots. They arm twist him, they cajole, but they do not let him nominate Rice. They move Bob Gates up, or they bring in another manager--a Baker, a Mosbacher--until a week ago it could've been Lugar. Maybe Hatch or Grassly--someone to give them cover, but who won't rock the boat more than necessary.

The other bet is that they'll try to redeploy troops out of the hot spots in Iraq in time for the 2008 political conventions. They'll find a fig leaf of "progress" then pull troops back to where less of them are dying during the fall campaign.

14. My thoughts on this.
Bush would appoint a successor to Cheney.
His choice must be approved by both houses of congress.
(25th Amendment)
In a more or less 'normal' administration I'd expect him to choose someone relatively bland, with no negatives (like Gerald Ford by Nixon), who would easily pass the congressional vote.

But...these sure as hell ain't normal times.
In a purely political play (duh) I expect him to choose a 'minority' veep. Then any opposition could be labeled as racist or sexist.
Maybe Condoleeza Rice?

In any event, it could give a repug 'rising star' national exposure for 18 months or so and enable them to launch a bid for prez in 2008.

Just my thoughts.

17. Just remember congress has to approve him/her
This won't be like needing 60 votes to bring it to the senate. It will be a straight yes or no.

So bush can appoint anybody he wants, as long as we make sure congress doen't approve a nut like cheney. In this case I don't think they will.

Ding Dong! The Dick is dead. Which old Dick? The Wicked Dick!
Ding Dong! The Wicked Dick is dead.
Wake up - sleepy head, rub your eyes, get out of bed.
Wake up, the Wicked Dick is dead. He's gone where the goblins go,
Below - below - below. Yo-ho, let's open up and sing and ring the bells out.
Ding Dong' the merry-oh, sing it high, sing it low.
Let them know
The Wicked Dick is dead!

Unless Bush wants to nominate Al Gore or Bill Clinton for his VP. Otherwise we don't have to approve his nominee and we can just get along without a VP.

39. Can't believe they are so out of touch
I read (and post) to a rw site until they kick me off which eventually they do. They kick off all who disagree, but sometimes I can't help it. Yesterday a topic was Cheney impeachment. Not only do they believe the public would rise up and support him if the Dems ever tried impeachment , but they all truly believe he should run for Pres and would overwhelmingly be elected. I understand they think he is God and has done no wrong, but I cannot understand how they are so out of touch even mentioning his low low poll ratings for all these years mean nothing to them. They truly believe he would win in a landslide and that there would be a revolt if there were impeachment proceedings.

Getting rid of this malignant tumor would be the best thing that could happen to America and the world, just as its ascension to power was the worst.

Every morning, I pray that the newspaper on my front porch will have a big headline "Cheney Dead". It hasn't happened yet, but keep hope alive.
