Republicans hope that their votes like bills like this one will give their candidates enough political cover to survive the coming elections. They'll depend on Bush's veto to actually maintain the status quo, and just hope they can distance Bush from the Republican Party in the public's mind. We won't see numbers big enough to override the veto until it's clear that this strategy won't work, and that even election fraud can't deliver a Republican victory.

2. Pelosi had a big ol' grin on her face while announcing the bill had passed
She know it will be veto'd, but at least she got the bill passed with huge Democratic support.

What else can she do with the rest of the House filled with warmongering morons?

* will veto. Congress doesn't have votes to override the veto.

To stop the war, bring the troops home, stop the funding.

This bill would only redeploy the combat troops.
