Defense language expert questions FBI translation in Padilla case

MIAMI (AP) - A defense language expert says some FBI translations of telephone intercepts in the Jose Padilla (hoh-ZAY' puh-DEE'-uh) terrorism support trial are inaccurate.

And Kamal Yunis (KA'-mall YOU'-nis) says words that prosecutors say were code for violence have innocent alternative meanings.

The Arabic expert testified in Miami for the defense, who today began their rebuttal of the prosecution's case.

Yunis said, the word "eggplant" used by one defendant did not mean "rocket-propelled grenade" as a prosecution expert claimed. Yunis testified that it referred to money, specifically donations intended to help orphans and other needy Muslims.

1. If they hadn't fired the gay translators, they'd have known this.
