'Ominous' Disturbance Tracked In Gulf


A large disturbance that formed in the central part of the Gulf of Mexico on Thursday has a chance of strengthening into a tropical system over the next 24 hours.


Forecasters are tracking the cluster of thunderstorms located south of Louisiana Thursday afternoon.

"This disturbance in the Gulf is very ominous looking," Local 6 meteorologist Larry Mowry said. "It really looks like a scary picture on VIPIR with all the thunderstorms firing up in the central part of the Gulf of Mexico. But, there is no organization to the thunderstorms, which is a good thing."

Mowry said upper-level winds are also helping slow development.
