Probe is expanding
Interior Department investigates SeaLife Center appropriation

By ERIKA BOLSTAD and RICHARD MAUER

WASHINGTON -- An ever-widening federal corruption probe into Alaska politics has zeroed in on a land sale involving the SeaLife Center in Seward and a former aide to U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens.

Federal investigators are looking into earmarks that the state's senior senator steered to the research and tourist attraction near Seward's waterfront.

They are specifically focusing on a $1.6 million Stevens-driven allocation to the SeaLife Center, which spent $558,000 of the money to buy a lot owned by lobbyist and former Stevens aide Trevor McCabe last year.

<snip>

The investigation adds to the list of federal inquiries that involve specific actions Stevens may have taken in Congress. Last summer, the FBI raided the offices of Stevens' son, former state Senate President Ben Stevens. In their raid, FBI agents seized documents involving the Alaska Fisheries Marketing Board, which was created in 2003 in legislation by the elder Stevens to provide federal grants to companies to promote Alaska seafood.

<snip>

Meanwhile, Roll Call also reported that a Senate subcommittee has asked questions about a Stevens earmark for a National Archives Building in Anchorage. A subcommittee of the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee met with National Archives staffers Friday for an explanation of how the federal agency bought land for a new regional archives building.

15. Not looking good for Ben, is it?
Edited on Wed Aug-01-07 01:11 PM by Blue_In_AK
Our theory here in this house is that they're taking down Ted first (or at least diluting his influence) so that he won't be able to interfere in Ben's indictment which is going to be huge, IMO. He'll make those other indicted state legislators look like rank amateurs in the corruption game.

5. About McCabe and his fishy deals
The name 'Trevor McCabe' comes up all the time like a bad penny. Here's two sad stories that have his name written all over them.

***
Trevor McCabe and Jeremiah Campbell (40% each, Ezra Campbell 20%) own Alaska Northern Outfitters LLC (Commercial charter business based in Seward), which in turn owns 100% of Northern Explorer LLC, which owns the M/V Mary J (100' fish tender purchased last summer). Ed Rasmuson (Wells Fargo Executive, NPFMC member) is their banker.

This tender received a contract to buy 2006 PWS salmon from the seine fleet after the Valdez mtg. Trevor McCabe purchased a PWS & a Cook Inlet salmon seine permit in 2005. Nelson & McCabe are owners in Point Bluff LLC (real estate on the other side of a 'Bridge to Nowhere'). Nelson, McCabe & Campbell are owners in Alaska Halibut Championship together. McCabe & Steve Zelener own Worldwide Alaska Seafood LLC together, and they are also partners in Lake-Aire Alaska LLC. McCabe & Nelson are both past Executive Directors of At-Sea Processors Association, a trade organization representing US/Flag catcher/processor vessels and the Seattle based companies that own them.(consortiums that benefited immensely when deeded annual fish harvests under the American Fisheries Act that Trevor authored as Sen. Ted Stevens fisheries aide.)

18. Tie him
on the Bridge to Nowhere and let the ravens pick him clean.

When are we going to learn NOT to tolerate these criminals in govt? Stevens has been tolerated, elevated, celebrated. Leniency toward these serial profiteers is undermining everything we care about in this country.

21. Yeah "Ted Stevens International"
might be due for a name change...they've already scrapped the statue. LOL

Plans have been scrapped to “erect a nine-foot-tall…statuary tribute” to Sen. Ted Stevens (R-AK) at the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport. According to the Anchorage Daily News, “Ted fans decided that…recently vocal enemies of his successful delivery of federal largesse to Alaska might use the project to disparage him.” Last week, Stevens revealed that he had been asked by the FBI “to preserve records as part of a widening investigation into Alaskan political corruption.” June 12, 2007

http://thinkprogress.org/2007/06/12/ted-fans-scrap-plans-for-9-foot-tall-statue-of-sen-stevens/

In my opinion they should NEVER name ANY public building, highway, airport, etc after any living individual. I could extend that to non-living too.

Ted's a classic all right. I hope good old Ted gets Cunninghammed and you Alaskans can get your hijacked state back.
