Stevens asked to step down from committees...
RESPONSE: Colleagues on both sides say request is premature.

WASHINGTON -- A day following the federal raid on his Girdwood home, two nonpartisan watchdog groups called on U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens to step down from any Senate committees where he oversees appropriations.

Both Taxpayers for Common Sense and Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington asked Republican leaders on Tuesday to request that Stevens at least temporarily step down until the FBI investigation is resolved.

Stevens is "entitled to due process and remains innocent until proven otherwise," wrote Ryan Alexander, president of Taxpayers for Common Sense. "But the standard for holding a powerful committee position should not hinge on the absence of a criminal conviction. Even the appearance of using public office for personal profit undermines public confidence in Congress."

<snip>

About a half-dozen reporters chased Stevens as he left the meeting and strode quickly with his press aide toward his small office in the Capitol, known as a hideaway. He refused to respond to questions in any way. Stevens finally stopped at a "no admittance" sign. Still silent and with pursed lips, he turned to the reporters. He motioned abruptly to the sign as though wordlessly ordering a car to stop, then he resumed walking down the private hallway.

A few minutes later, though, he had a few choice words for a CNN reporter who followed him down a stairway in the Capitol. "I put out a statement and I'm not saying anything to anybody beyond that statement," he told reporter Dana Bash.

When Bash asked what federal agents were looking for in the raid, Stevens responded:

"Can you understand English? That's the only statement I'm going to make."

2. Oh boy. Prepare for Alaskans to start turning their back on the man.
If he can't provide all that money he's been dishing out these past years.

Oh, wait. He's being asked to leave.

Nevermind. :eyes:

7. A lot of us turned our back on him a long time ago.
There just didn't seem to be any viable Democratic challengers for years. Now all of a sudden we've got more good candidates than we have positions for. Boom or bust up here.

14. Sez Trent Lott:
"We all know Ted Stevens as a good man, a tireless advocate for improving the quality of life in Alaska, a decorated veteran and a true patriot of our country. He's asked us to await all information during this investigation, and I will while I'm standing by our longest-serving colleague."
----------

Shouldn't that be --"our longest serving thieving skunk?"

Just like Cunningham, all these criminals get supported by their kind.
