Officer in Bush motorcade injured
Tribune staff
Monday, August 27, 2007

A Rio Rancho police officer escorting President Bush's motorcade was injured in a motorcycle crash near the Albuquerque International Sunport today.

Witnesses said the crash occurred on an access road to the Albuquerque International Sunport a little before 2 p.m. today. Bush was returning to Air Force One after a private fund-raiser for Sen. Pete Domenici in Los Ranchos de Albuquerque. He flew out shortly after the accident.

Few details are available; however, it appeared the officer was very seriously injured.

Bernalillo County Sheriff Darren White, who was in the motorcade, said he went past the scene shortly after the crash and "his heart sank." White said the motorcade was traveling quickly at the time of the crash.

The male officer has been transported to the hospital. The wrecked motorcycle could be seen resting near the base of a tree. The force of the crash had popped off the seat, which was in the middle of the road.

Chaplains from the Albuquerque Police Department were at the scene, along with officers from numerous departments. White said officers from the Rio Rancho police were attempting to contact the officer's family.

(AP) HONOLULU A motorcycle officer injured last week while escorting President Bush in the islands died Sunday, police said.

Steve Favela, 30, and two other officers crashed their cycles as the presidential motorcade was traveling across Hickam Air Force Base to meet troops for breakfast early Tuesday. The other officers were treated at The Queen's Medical Center and released.

Favela, an eight-year veteran of the Honolulu Police Department and father of four, had suffered internal injuries and had been in critical condition at the medical center.

8. The Honolulu officer died IIRC
These guys seem to go way too quickly. With a motorcade as bulletproof as the one the President rides in I see no reason to travel as fast as they do.

7. This is the second time that has happened.
From the article at link:

This is the second time a local motorcycle officer has been injured while escorting the president. In February 2006, a police officer with the town of Bernalillo lost control of his motorcycle on I-25 southbound near Avenida Cesar Chavez. Sgt. Jerry Nixon suffered minor injuries.

And there was that bicycle cop who was injured while in a motorcade with Bush. What's going on?

16. The one that Bush ran into?
Bush 'fell off bike while waving'
George W Bush had one hand off his handlebars when he came off his bicycle during last July's G8 summit, according to newly-published police documents.

"(The unit) was requested to cover the road junction on the Auchterarder to Braco Road as the President of the USA, George Bush, was cycling through," the report stated. (At) about 1800 hours the president approached the junction at speed on the bicycle. The road was damp at the time.

"As the president passed the junction at speed he raised his left arm from the handlebars to wave to the police officers present while shouting 'Thanks, you guys, for coming'. "As he did this he lost control of the cycle, falling to the ground, causing both himself and his bicycle to strike (the officer) on the lower legs. (The officer) fell to the ground, striking his head.

"The president continued along the ground for approximately five metres, causing himself a number of abrasions. The officers... then assisted both injured parties."

13. Some years ago, a motorcycle officer in President Clinton's motorcade was injured...
I recall that the president stopped the motorcade so that his personal physician could attend to the injured officer.

14. And what makes me so angry about all this
IS we pay for this. bush had a fit because congress is passing a law that says that he or the RNC has to pay for the use of the plane AND the cost of the fuel etc. He just wants to pay a first class ticket. How about us all writing and asking for a ticket to Air Force one.

31. He gets around it though
If he's going to a campaign event, he just makes a short stop somewhere else in the town doing something as "President" before he goes off campaigning, and then he doesn't have to pay, IIRC.

Although I don't doubt most presidents have done this. Maybe not though.

29. Forty years old...
Motorcade officer dies after crash

ALBUQUERQUE (AP) - A Rio Rancho police officer who crashed his motorcycle Monday afternoon while riding in a motorcade for President Bush has died.

Forty-year-old Officer Germaine Casey was rushed after the crash to an Albuquerque hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The motorcycle was near the front of the motorcade, and the president saw the wreck as he drove past on the way to the airport.

Rio Rancho police spokesman John Francis says Bush called to give his condolences to the officer's family and to the department.

Francis says the president also had planned to call Casey's wife to give his condolences.

Casey's motorcycle hit a curb and then a tree, but investigators still are reconstructing the accident to determine exactly what happened.

25. Not only that:
There are a few military personnel of ours that have
died due to Bush recently, and Bush doesn't seen to
care a whole lot about them either.
