So, here's the question I've been pondering a lot today: how do we honestly ensure that the next Attorney General understands that they are not the personal lawyer of the President of the United States. How do we ensure they "get it" that they do not represent the President; they represent the American people.
The biggest reason I feel Alberto Gonzales was never qualified for the role of Attorney General, is because he always viewed himself as Bush's personal lawyer. After all, that's the capacity he served in for so long, from Bush's time as Governor of Texas, to serving as White House Counsel after the 2000 coup.
Once he became A.G., Gonzales was used to being such a loyal Bushie that it never clicked with him that his client was the American people; not the President.
And I'm honestly wondering: how, if at all possible, do we ensure that the next Attorney General is able to comprehend who they are truly serving; who their true client is. It won't be enough that they verbalize this during their confirmation hearing. We would expect nothing less.
