Caught On Tape GOP Advocates Letting Homes Burn In Montana
Edited on Sun Sep-02-07 06:12 AM by EV_Ares
You want to see the real-world problems with right-wing extremism? Here's a good example of it from Big Sky Country. With Montana facing major wildfires, senior Montana Republican lawmaker John Sinrud - who heads the state House's appropriations committee - used a legislative hearing this week to attack Gov. Brian Schweitzer's (D) administration for - get ready for this - trying to prevent homes and buildings from being burnt down. At the hearing, he asks "Why not just let burn?" Ah yes, what a refreshing dose of "compassionate" conservatism.

3. No, seriously

Why not? Things burn in the wild, and if you have a house in a burn zone without adequate firebreaks or other forms of protection, well, bad luck.

oh, and by the way...houses in flood zones should be on stilts, houses in hurricane alley should have flat roofs and tempered glass; houses in earthquake country should be reinforced. A house should be built to withstand an event who's likelihood of occurence is twice the expected lifetime of the house. In the mountain west, that is fire.

6. i kinda agree with you...
anything built in certain disaster prone areas (earthquakes, floods, fires...) should have certain safeguards. when buildings are destroyed by a flood every few years, the rebuilt ones should have to meet certain standards. i remember how mad i got when i heard about the multi million dollar houses on the east coast that were destroyed a few times and the government helped the millionaires rebuilt over and over with no increased protections. just kept bailing them out.

4. I think he would feel different if his or his families homes were
in the path of a fire.

5. Great terrorist target!
I keep wondering when the "terrorists" realize that a small band of people could set practically this whole country on fire, and, with practically all of our National Guard overseas, we would be almost powerless to stop it.
