The San Francisco Chronicle has a feature they call '2 Cents' in which they ask Bay Area residents to comment on a current affairs topic.
Today the question is, "How do you wish the U.S. had responded to the 9/11 attacks?" Most of the replies are quite informed and thoughtful, but of course no area is immune to wingnuttery. This response in particular caught my eye:
Exactly the way President Bush and our military leaders did, but with these improvements: I would have used low-yield nukes on the caves Tora Bora, created a "Club Gitmo" much earlier, and thrown those on the left who have provided continuous aid and comfort to our Islamofacist terrorist enemies -- like Sean Penn -- in with them, and directed our troops to do one thing: Take no prisoners. Here's the he-man who, I'm sure, thinks we 'hate America':
Gee, he looks young enough to serve, doesn't he?
Have you ever noticed how much the 'liberals hate America crowd' actually
hate Americans? From asking terrorists to bomb San Francisco, or the New York Times building, or accusing us of treason and whatnot, or throwing us into Gitmo as this lovely man wants - they hate Americans with a vengeance that I've never before seen in my lifetime. Yet they spit at us at every opportunity that we 'hate America', which is certainly projection at best and self-delusion at worst.
I'll add that they also occasionally interview people who are simply ignorant and dense - as this comment illustrates:
As soon as the dust settled on Sept. 11, I would have been on the phone to the joint chiefs, mustering every long-range bomber we had. By Sept. 12, American bombs would have leveled the entire country of Iraq into dry, empty desert sand. Then I would have allocated all the money the U.S. has wasted on that unwinnable war to the development of hydrogen fuel-cell technology, so that in 5 or 10 years, the world would be free of its slavery to oil!Ack.
