Poll question: If Hillary is our nominee, do you think she can win the General Election?
I will be voting Democratic in 2008 and though Hillary is far from my preferred choice as the Democratic nominee for President; the MSM continues to push the fact or propaganda that she is the presumptive favorite.

Hypothetically, do you think HRC has a chance to win the General Election?

As an aside, this poll is not asking if you will vote for her --- simply do you think she can win?

but her negative coattails will take down democratic candidates and progressive ballot measures all over the country.

I'm one that doesn't know if she can win. I don't think anyone can know.

The question is, 'do we really want to take that chance?'.

14. Hillary is a lose/lose proposition.
She's the only candidate that could motivate the right-wing's disillusioned base to get out and vote, and she's not very popular with Democrats. Add to that her thoroughly DLC politics, and I fail to see her appeal.

Why risk everything for a shot at gaining nothing?

22. well...she's not very popular on DU
I agree with ya Marr; though somewhere according to some polling data - she remains not only popular, but in the lead. Seems with the MSM anyway, HRC hovers in the 40% range with Obama in the low 20% and Edwards 15-18%.

I remain baffled at the disconnect between DU and all the other DEMS out there that theoretically support her??? Who are these folks and where do they live? Not one of my Dem friends is voting for her (in the primaries) - I'm currently in the Obama camp (with Edwards slowly gaining more appeal).

I just don't get it!

That being said, I really, really have my doubts if she can win the general anyway. Thats why I asked...

peace :)

17. She will win
if we have fair elections in Florida and Ohio, which is not a given.

Things will be better after she is elected. She will gradually get us out of Iraq. Frankly I'll be relieved to see her President. Anything is better than what we've got now.

When she does win, we must build a strategy, a coalition on the left to make sure she listens to us. We need to keep the pressure on and keep her accountable.

24. I can't vote in this poll. I don't think we can make comparisons to
Dukakis or anybody else. We have literally never had a woman candidate in a major party run for president in the general and her situation as the wife of a former much loved president is also unique.

We won't know until there are more polls showing what Republicans and Independents are going to do. That's a ways off from now. I trust well done, large polls and it's too early to get an accurate reading.

52. I agree ...
There is no denying her effectiveness as both a campaigner and politician ...

I don't want her to be the nominee, cause it will be an absolute BLOODFEST of an election, the right wing WILL go nuts ... Then, it will be the 90s redeux, with her doing a good job and them going off on bizarre tangents and fishing expeditions trying to bring her down ... It just is going to be brutal ...

But, I agree that gets it done ... All this "motivating the base" stuff ... eh ... She might bring out a couple more votes, but most of the people who go ape shiite about her are die hard Rs who DO vote and WILL NOT vote D under any circumstances to begin with ...

45. In my opinion the polls are meaningless because the reason
she will lose easily has to do with turnout, not what people phoned at home sitting on their couch think. With Hillary you do not get an energized base, you don't get motivation. It will not turn out the numbers say an Edwards or an Obama would.

Do you think anyone is going to get excited that Hillary will:
  • Continue the occupation of Iraq
  • Continue letting Health Care companies loot the system and deny people care
  • Continue letting corporations have undue power and influence over our political system
  • Continue letting higher education become more and more unattainable for everyone but the rich

I'd have to disagree. We didn't win in '06 because people stayed home. There's little reason to believe that '08 is going to be any different.

Just curious MyPetRock, what happened in your thinking that "it's beginning to feel inevitable that she will be our next president"??? What do you base your optimism on?

Yea, I'd totally dig having a Clinton back in the WH - if Bill could serve as Pres for a 3rd term. I've always had great admiration for him - my post was simply to gage if DUers shared the optimism that you say you feel. By a 2 to 1 margin, apparently not.
