PBS - This Land is Your Land
Edited on Fri Sep-21-07 02:41 AM by ConsAreLiars
So, TV browsing I came across this program featuring some of the "oldsters" of folk music. A fundraiser for the corporatized PBS, and thus focussed mainly on the crap/pop/♠lightweight side of that era, but still ...

Yet even the trite side of that era included songs like "Where have All the Flowers Gone" by Pete Seeger, and even though PBS uses "The Highwayman" to do a rip off soul-less variant it is worth hearing. In one way, this is a tribute, but in another, it is a scam. The "artists" they feature are maybe good-intentioned, but they are just pale imitations of the real music of that tradition.

Here's the Seeger version - I won't inflict the lame PBS variant on you - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RhlOJm9nkwM

(Edit to add) The full version by Peter, Paul and Mary: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLe9pJSRas0&mode=related&search=

And by Joan Baez: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKvdPsnkPC0&mode=related&search=

And by Marlene Dietrich: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RPSmrb82ocM&mode=related&search=

Where have all the flowers gone?
Long time passing.
Where have all the flowers gone?
Long time ago.
Where have all the flowers gone?
The girls have picked them ev'ry one.
Oh, when will you ever learn?
Oh, when will you ever learn?

Where have all the young girls gone?
Long time passing.
Where have all the young girls gone?

Long time ago.
Where have all the young girls gone?
They've taken husbands, every one.
Oh, when will you ever learn?
Oh, when will you ever learn?

Where have all the young men gone?
Long time passing.
Where have all the young men gone?
Long time ago.
Where have all the young men gone?
They're all in uniform.
Oh, when will you ever learn?
Oh, when will you ever learn?

Where have all the soldiers gone?
Long time passing.
Where have all the soldiers gone?
Long time ago.
Where have all the soldiers gone?
They've gone to graveyards, every one.
Oh, when will they ever learn?
Oh, when will they ever learn?

Where have all the graveyards gone?
Long time passing.
Where have all the graveyards gone?
Long time ago.
Where have all the graveyards gone?
They're covered with flowers, every one.
Oh, when will they ever learn?
Oh, when will they ever learn?

Where have all the flowers gone?
Long time passing.
Where have all the flowers gone?
Long time ago.
Where have all the flowers gone?
Young girls picked them, every one.
Oh, when will they ever learn?
Oh, when will they ever learn?

2. We come from the same place. The music just reminded me of what has been lost.
Another bit of it - Baez "With God on Our Side: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pih1hVdflnQ&mode=related&search=

(And ALL of Phil Ochs - Youtube has several but not Pleasures of the Harbor or Flower Lady)
