Chicks claim 5 Grammys

The Dixie Chicks, shunned by country radio after singer Natalie Maines slammed President Bush, were the big winners at tonight's Grammys, taking home five trophies. It was also a big night for Mary J. Blige and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who each picked up three awards. Double award winners were John Mayer, T.I. and Ludacris.

(CNN) -- The Grammy Awards were nice to the Dixie Chicks, who won five awards at the 49th annual honors -- including album of the year for "Taking the Long Way," song of the year (a songwriter's award) and record of the year for "Not Ready to Make Nice."

"I think people are expressing their freedom of speech tonight," said lead singer Natalie Maines, who ignited controversy in 2003 by criticizing President Bush. "I'm very humbled."

I thought it amusing because, though the disc was deserving of success, it would stick in the craw of every wing-nut from Hannity to Weiner.

They'll all claim that "Buxh-haters" in the music industry are allowing politix to guide their votes for the Grammies, as if it's impossible that they won on their own talent and hit-maker Rick Rubin.

And it is a huge FUCK YOU to corporations...Clear Channel tried to break them...and darn near did, yet the chicks rose back up through the obstacles and showed they had what it takes.
