Stabbing in Midtown Manhattan; the woman stabbed lives in my building.

At least I hope the word "lives" is still applicable. I can't tell if I know her from the picture but I probably do, it looks like it could be an old picture and I know at least one person with a black scottie.

She was taking her dog to be blessed, probably in the Armenian church near us. : (

2. I used to work with a man whose ex-wife was in a state mental hospital.
When he went to visit her they used to have to unlock at least one door before he could see her.

At a later date, when patients were allowed to go out into the world (apparently medicated) he went to see her and they told him she was "out" for the day and would be back later.

3. it can be very difficult to keep some types of mentally ill people properly medicated
Edited on Sun Oct-07-07 09:03 PM by AndreaCG
I'm bipolar and pretty good about taking the meds but they don't have many side effects (usually; right now I have a rash and that is a potential very bad side effect so I am monitoring it closely) but I'm not prone to out and out mania. I think that's when bipolars usually stop taking meds, more than the hypomania which is not as extreme. And sadly schizophrenics are quite prone to discontinuing meds. I think their meds still have quite bad side effects.

4. How awful!
It appears it was a totally random attack...could have happened to anyone in the wrong spot at the wrong time. Take care, Andrea! I will keep your neighbor in my thoughts and prayers.

5. Thanks brer cat.
It's a safe neighborhood usually. As you say it's just random. Bellevue hospital is probably where his family was taking him and that's about 10 blocks away from the stabbing.

7. I am glad that an off duty officer got involved even if it was a little late
As someone who was once rescued, I can tell you it really makes your view of the world.

8. He saved her life
a difficult job, considering how quickly he had to react and how many people were in the area who could have been hurt. The guy is a hero.

11. So is the guy from the restaurant where the knives were stolen
He was cut on the ear badly, yet still came out with towels to stem her bleeding. Most of the people in the street ran. I don't know what I'd do in that situation, be a hero or run. With all that weaponry I would suspect I'd have run, though, and then tried to get help.

9. I heard about this on the news this morning. I hope she makes a full recovery and I
I hope that her dog is in good hands while she does.

I used to live in that neighborhood.

12. We have a lot of dogs in this building
And most of them socialize well with each other so I have no doubt the doggie is being well taken care of either by a relative or a neighbor.

We have also started a fund to help her with her expenses. If anyone wants to donate email me.

10. These are the kind of stories that haunt
We can easily imagine this happening to us. I say bless the cop who came to her aid. I hope she recovers. The woman is also a survivor of breast cancer.

I hate when this kind of thing happens to innocent people who are just trying to live their lives and trying to have a nice day.

13. attacker is schizophrenic former model; family was taking him to hospital for psych evaluation...
... when he bolted the car and went on the lam in the hours before the assault:

Very similar to the infamous Mark Bechard case in Maine, in which a schizophrenic man invaded a convent and stabbed and bludgeoned the handful of elderly nuns who lived there -- killing two of the Sisters, and seriously wounding two others. After this, he was ordered held at the state mental hospital, where he remains.

:scared:

Best wishes to your neighbor! I hope she'll recover fully and swiftly.
