"IF" you recognize Columbus Day as a national holiday
this is part and parcel of what you are commemorating.

"Columbus and his men also used the Taino as sex slaves: it was a common reward for Columbus’ men for him to present them with local women to rape. As he began exporting Taino as slaves to other parts of the world, the sex-slave trade became an important part of the business, as Columbus wrote to a friend in 1500: “A hundred castellanoes (a Spanish coin) are as easily obtained for a woman as for a farm, and it is very general and there are plenty of dealers who go about looking for girls; those from nine to ten (years old) are now in demand.”

4. It makes sense, regarding the point of the OP.
Mattress sales to commemorate the Spanish Sex Slave Trade of the 16th Century.

Tiene razón.

21. Nah, it's all the post office
I didn't have to go deliver mail today to the post office. As far as I'm concerned, that's what I'm celebrating.

3. So you're deeding your house to the nearest amerindian tribe?
Giving them your car? Your firstborn? A shoelace?

You're so outraged, I just figured you were going to do something about it.

14. What about INFORMATION are you so opposed to?
Where in my post did I signify OUTRAGE? Sometimes things are posted in DU as an attempt to impart knowledge.

7. You have to recognize today is a federal holiday
whether you like it or not. Or did you go and check your mail to see if you received anything? Did you stop by the bank? Probably not, why: because you recognized that today is a federal holiday. Of course you don't have to agree with what it stands for.

12. Yes, I went to the bank, and those fuckers were closed
It really pissed me off that they observe such a murder. Plus now I am overdrawn because they were closed. Shit.

and he died penniless basically. His grossly mistreated the natives in present day Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Domincan Republic.

13. Are you serious
My child's school didn't even observe a minute of silence on 9/11. I sure hope they didn't do that, I will ask her.

15. Tongue in cheek
Edited on Mon Oct-08-07 04:23 PM by ashling
Let me repeat:

We had an exam - 25 multiple choice, 3 essays - that lasted for the entire one hour and twenty minutes. It covered, among other thins, the Columbian Exchange. They were supposed to be quiet during the test. BTW, this is a college class.

17. If it's true, it's true. Is it?
I thought I had a pretty good idea of what Columbus was all about, but I have never heard of systematic rape. How does the writer know this?

The 'royalty' of Europe and the 'princes' of the Roman Catholic Church.

22. Wouldn't you have to dig them up first
Seems a little counterproductive, personally, what with them already being dead and all.

23. Sorry Bud, but I liked my day off.
Its not like I celebrated Columbus, I just like having an extra day to sleep in. And I frankly don't want to give that up. Rename it if you like, but keep the day off.

24. If I get to stay home from work I'll take any holiday, even if it was veal day.
People in this country work to much.
I'll take any day off. Doesn't mean I'm celebrating it though.
