Col. Karpinski to Lindsay Graham: "You're As Cowardly As Sanchez, Rumsfeld and Miller"
Well I'm no Janis Karpinski fan to say the least. She was, after all the commander in charge of Abu Ghraib. She knew torture was illegal and immoral then. So its a little late to be griping now about how the Army screwed her. Her complaining about being the scapegoat for the Army falls on deaf ears. Well, up to a point. The point being when she speaks the truth. Truth is truth. And Lindsay Graham is a scumbag. So at least she got this one right.....

Some Loaded Comments at 'Abu Ghraib' Screening

Washington Post
By Amy Argetsinger and Roxanne Roberts
Tuesday, February 13, 2007; Page C03

When the lights go up after most documentary screenings, you usually can expect a politely snoozy lovefest at the "panel discussion to follow." So the folks who turned out for the preview of HBO's "Ghosts of Abu Ghraib" at the Ronald Reagan Building last night were unusually lucky.

Among the VIPs on hand to discuss the Rory Kennedy project (set to air Feb. 22) were Uncle Ted Kennedy and Sen. Lindsey Graham. The latter livened things up in a big way when he denounced Army Col. Janis Karpinski, who was demoted from brigadier general after the prison torture scandal.

"Karpinski should have been court-martialed," said the South Carolina Republican, who sits on the Armed Services Committee. "She was not a good commander."

Awkward! For who was in the audience but Karpinski herself. "I consider you as cowardly as Sanchez or Rumsfeld or Miller," she shot back. "You're saying I should be court-martialed -- they didn't want me in a courtroom because I would tell" the truth. Graham sputtered clumsily until moderator Jeffrey Toobin jumped in.

Afterward, Karpinski told our colleague Michael Cavna: "Ninety-nine percent of the story is still covered up. . . . Miller and Sanchez and Rumsfeld should be in those cells" with the Army guards who were found guilty.

Even a 1st Looey (Watada) knew the difference between legal and illegal. And he's on trial (or likely soon will be again). And you've still got your pension Karpinski. But just keep telling the truth, its never too late for that.

2. whatever her culpability then
i like her grit now

but if what she said: "they didn't want me in a courtroom because I would tell the truth" is true, and her claim that rummy et al should be behind bars has any merit, then why the hell is she not spilling her guts to a prosecutor somewhere - or to todays version of what bob woodward once was?

5. Read some of the info- she was not allowed to inspect HER OWN
PRISONS due to Contractors/CIA. She believed that they knew what they were doing (she had 10 or so other prisons she was overseeing).

She should have DEMANDED access - BUT, if she had would she be talking to us now?

7. True: she was kept out by CIA/contractors. Then she was scapegoated for their crimes.
I love it that she zapped Graham in public!

9. She SHOULD have done more - but had insurmountable roadblocks
in her way.....I am sooooo proud that she came out w/ the TRUTH once she realized she was being scapegoated. Lesser men/women would have shrunk back.

10. I found it astonishing--totally news to me--according to "Iraq For Sale"
the defendants in the Abu Ghraib trials claimed in their trials that about half the incidents of abuse they were involved in were prompted by Titan and C.A.C.I. contractors who were carrying out interrogations of prisoners.

That's the fucked up amazing thing to me, private contractors conducting interrogations of military prisoners for profit--and ordering military personnel around. The more prisoners get interrogated the more money Titan and C.A.C.I were making. Now I'm just wondering if the General who was responsible for stuffing Abu Ghraib prison full of know-nothing, no value detainees, who was the Gen. Ricardo Sanchez that Karpinski denounced at this event, had or has now any relationship or stock with either Titan or C.A.C.I..

8. Gosh, they must still be Febreezing Sally Quinn's chair
But I suppose the fact that Graham was still in the building at lights up means that this Rory Joint is little better than a graywash filled with "bad app pull" mantras.

Pity.

11. 99% of the story is hidden?
Christ. At this rate I won't be surprised to discover that Rumsfeld flew over to have tea with bin Laden in a location where they could watch the fireworks from safety.
