4. Yeah, then these are the google ads.
Skinner can block individual ads from appearing if he knows their URL but keep in mind he has absolutely no control over any new ads. So once in a while we might all see something we don't like and usually other people don't see them as these ads are random and targeted based on the page you happen to be on.

so they can all be dealt with expeditiously?

5. Rather than posting a new thread every time one of these issues arises...
perhaps we should just e-mail the admins.

The reaction to it seemed surprisingly mixed. Somehow, some people thought that it was funny.

19. Could just be an ad rotation.
They tend to run them as long as they're paid for, so maybe the contract just ran out.

Then again, you could certainly be right in that the numerous threads about it influenced the admins to take action.

Either way, I'm glad it's gone.

22. You have no proof that the nutcracker was removed because of anything you did
and as I told you above they have no control over the ads that appear which are from google. These ads are chosen from a pool for thousands of different ads and selected based on the page you are on, there is no way they could control such a huge pool of ads.

28. It may have just been that the Hillary nutcracker ad simply expired.
They run ads for certain lengths of time; it might have just run its course. However, since ads to the same company remained, I'm guessing they saw the threads, thought "well, this ain't gonna make money," and stopped running that particular ad.

You cannot do a similar thing to the completely-automated, dynamic Google AdWords.

18. Those are Google text ads. We can't do anything about that,
Edited on Thu Oct-18-07 10:28 AM by Rhythm and Blue
because they're computer-generated on Google's server by observing the words that appear on this page. Advertisers pay to link their ads to certain words (hence the name AdWords), and there's nothing Skinner or anyone at DU can do about it. I mean, they could stop running the ads, but that would be ridiculous and costly.

I suppose you could write Google and say that you consider that ad offensive, but they frankly won't care.

Edited on Thu Oct-18-07 10:39 AM by saracat
No one told the posters who were upset about the Hillary nutcracker to "forget about it, nothing can be done" which is what is being implied.

26. That was a different type of ad.
That was a graphical banner ad: an ad that had been specifically set up by the advertising company. They had paid for, and were running, that particular ad as part of a rotation. All that removing it would take is an email saying "hey, pull that, please." In that case, they'd simply remove that particular ad from their rotation and go about.

These are a totally different type of ad, in which text ads from a pool of hundreds of thousands are automatically chosen by a remote server--and generated on that server for each viewer. If you want to complain, you'll have to complain to Google to pull that ad from its entire advertising network. There is literally no way to block it from appearing here. They are completely different types of ads.

31. Yes. Google.
You go into your account and enter domains that you don't want on your site. For instance, if your competitor were showing up on your site, you might want to block their ads.

from seeing them. And I do care that a Democratic site is carrying such defamation of one of our candidates. If the Hillary nutcracker was offensive this is even more so as it isn't a joke.

37. Google ads work like their search engine.
I've seen ads for Democratic candidates on conservative websites simply because the candidates name is somewhere on the page. If StopHillary.com has a deal to feature Google ads, chances are a pro-Hillary ad will sometimes pop up.

Same here. If you don't like it just hit refresh.
