Yet another climate change and observations, this time involving pet parrots
ok, for anybody who has a feathered child at home... have you noticed definite spring time behavior?

My nanday, and it hit me like a bag of bricks today.. is shreding and having a wonderful nesting behavior IN THE MIDDLE OF OCTOBER!

Either that or my teenager is back...

Just curious since weather patterns are changing

1. Max Planck Institute for Ornithology...

I have a dear friend there who has dedicated her life/studies on ornithology and chronobiology. She is a research scientist who completed her dissertation on the seasonal timing in different environments of Stonechats. She has extended her research to gain a broader perspective on the calendars and clocks that are involved in the timing of avian behavior.

Would you be interested in browsing her previous research findings?

2. Sure, but also in the informal observations of parrot parents
we truly get very attuned to our kid's behavior...

And spring behavior is more than just curious.

4. no parrot, have pet chicken
Several weeks ago she "decided" to start laying eggs again. She only laid a few, but I did think the timing was odd. She also moulted near the end of summer... looked like feather pillow had exploded in the house (she is an inside-outside bird). Henrietta is a good buddy; she likes sitting on my lap and being petted and mooching for treats.

...found in a book on chicken raising:
Q:what is the difference between a pet chicken and a pet parrot?
A: $3000.

Yep I think birds are starting to behave weird

By the way, now that you mentioned molting, our sun conure has been doing quite a bit of that... repeatedly, but she is from Hawaii and any weather change and it's feathers all over the place

(Oh and we have three birds, we didn't even get to 1\3 of that, and the cockatiel is just twenty this year)

11. "easter-egg" hybrid
mostly Ameraucana. Her eggs are pale celadon green and large. Henrietta is a fairly good-sized bird with lovely golden feathers. I think she sees us as her flock...

Henny:damn funny-looking birds, no feathers and strange feet, but they feed me well.

7. These are indoor birds?
Indoor weather is usually a lot more moderate than outdoor weather - and they're still being affected?

8. Very much so
And either we are having our teen back, or he is engaged in classic nesting (shreding) behavior

Got him a bunch of shreders and now we are having a very one sided conversation as to why he has to (once again) leave the furniture alone

10. Pigeons are like rats with wings
but I asked this since this is actually quite serious.

Nesting behavior in October in North America... nope... should not be happening
