The Hearts that I gave are in memory of
my first cousin who died in CA on the first of this month, after battling cancer for 2 years.

She and I were raised together in Louisiana, before her family moved to CA. She was the sister I never had. Her father, my uncle, was the director of one of the largest counties' welfare department, and as such, was a large factor in my becoming a "compassionate liberal."

My cousin was a good, loyal Democrat, but didn't make waves about it. She enjoyed hearing of my activist experiences, and encouraged me in my political adventures. She taught kindergarten for 33 years at the same school.

She was the most grounded, the most kind, the most caring woman I have ever known. I don't know what I will do without her now. There is no one else out there that shares my memories of our crazy family, our "adventurous" teen years (in which we raised all kinds of holy hell.)

For the last month of her life, she was cared for at home by her sister, her husband and myself....with the aid of a Hospice organization. I cannot say enough about the kind, caring support that Hospice gave to our family. They were truly angels. I wish I could give them hearts.

(no need to reply...just wanted to share a little bit about a person some would consider ordinary, but who was/is my hero...thanks.)

9. Haven't been around much lately, too busy with life
My husband had major back surgery, and my son got his teaching degree and moved to Arkansas to start his teaching career. Hopefully things will settle down soon and I'll be able to hang around a little more! No major damage here from the tornadoes. We had a few tree limbs that came down and some shingles were torn off our garage, but that was about it. Could have been a lot worse. My thoughts are with you and your family. Your cousin sounds like she was a remarkable woman, and I'm sorry for your loss.

7. What a beautiful story.

I am sure the benefactors of your generosity appreciate the hearts.
 I watched my best friend fight breast cancer. She has been dead 4 years and not a day goes by that I don't think about her.
Some days I even cry. She suffered greatly in the end. I can't tell you how horrible it was to get a phone call with her screaming in pain and getting in the car and driving 3 hours to figure out how to make it stop. I was her "private nurse" she liked to tease.
Your cousin sounds very much like her.

10. I'm very sorry for your loss
The real heroes are everyday folks who are extraordinary just like your cousin. She will live on through your precious memories and the stories you share with others.

Hospice is an awesome organization and I found volunteering with them a most rewarding activity.

Wishing you Peace
