Bills have been introduced in Congress that would phase-out the non-therapeutic use in animal agriculture of antibiotics that are deemed important to human medicine. The Preservation of Antibiotics for Medical Treatment Act was introduced in the Senate by Edward Kennedy (D-MA), Chair of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee along with Senator Olympia Snowe (R-ME). The House version was introduced by Rules Committee Chair, Louise Slaughter (D-NY), the only microbiologist in Congress.

1. Good idea and this needs to be addressed for general human consumers too

There simply is no need for antibiotics in everything, and there is strong evidence that it is acting as a strong natural selector for more virulence in bacteria.
