Did anybody watch "author" Jenna Bush on Jay Leno last night?
I didn't stay up to watch, but thought it curious that she was listed in the TV guides as author rather than Presidential daughter, Jenna Bush, even though she no doubt was pushing her ghost written book.

Is Bush such a poisonous association that even his own daughter is distancing herself from him as not helpful to her new "career"?

3. I should have put this up.
http://books.guardian.co.uk/news/articles/0,,2028383,00.html

The book, called Ana's Story: A Journey of Hope, will focus on a 17-year-old orphaned single mother with HIV. It has been bought by HarperCollins for an undisclosed sum - believed to be above $300,000 (£155,500) - is due to be published this autumn. A "portion" of author and publisher proceeds will go to the US fund for Unicef, which supports child survival, protection and development worldwide through education, advocacy and fundraising.

7. HarperCollins is Rupert MURDOCH.
Normally, $300,000 would be a lot of money for a ghosted book.

Certainly, the sum's just chump change for Chimpy's child.

children don't want to have anything to do with him? I suppose you aren't a fan of freedom of speech either?

I think you may be getting the Bush girls confused with Giuliani's brood.

24. There is nothing childish about the OP.
Jenna is an adult promoting herself as a writer, nothing wrong with questioning her reasons for not promoting herself as the president's daughter....

11. It certainly seems to me to be a question of "economics"....
tout her connection to baby bush and lose sales re her book, it is as simple as that. If, on the other hand, bush's poll numbers were high, who her daddy is would be big on the promotional agenda, imo.

12. I read today where it has supposedly sold 41,000 copies..
which is being spun as a "success", because MOST books don't sell that well (I guess they're including self-published as well?). Reportedly, the publisher was banking on 100,000. Doesn't seem like a lot to me considering that she's been all over the tube and the country promoting the thing.

15. The same think tanks that buy up Ann Coulter and Jonah Goldberg's
books probably bought that 41,000 to ensure a best seller. They then hand them out for free. I know I got several of Coulter's diatribe that way. I refuse to pay real money for them just for research.

19. I saw a big display full of them at Barnes and Noble
the other day, right at the entrance to the store where it would be impossible to miss. I browsed at nearby tables for quite a while trying to gauge interest in it. I didn't see even one person pick up a copy to thumb through. Everyone breezed right past. I think she's got a lemon there, partly because of the subject matter and partly because the Bush name is poison.

34. Of course but the way these contracts are done
is name recognition, she has it

Timeliness, it is still timely

Potential for money... she is making it

It looks like a standard contract, with the name recognition

by the by, Krugman is also a mid list author and he has gotten quite a bit of promotion

I don't see this as anything out of the ordinary, really

36. I wonder if I would get the same level of promotion for my
first book if I use a recognizable name as my nom de plume, maybe Trisha Coulter, Ann's evil twin. My writing would of course be that hated word, "liberal".

I'm already laughing. It's so hard to get published when you come up from the trenches. You don't get any editorial help or ghost writers or big displays in the bookstores. I have friends who have and some who still are going through the struggle.

37. That's what name recognition gets you
why Jurors in high profile cases at times cash in

:-)

And I am in the trenches

But her name is buying her that.

If she was your average Bush, and not the daughter of George, I doubt she'd get beyond a small time print mag for her first book

But that is the reality of the market...

More than one agent has explained this one.

In fact, if I were an Agent and Jena aproached me... I'd take her in a new york second

39. So, the publisher will recoup all of the outlay?
I have no idea what a promo like this costs, but 41,000 seems like a pittance in return. Her name alone should have sold 250k it seems to me.

28. haha. Headlines is great!
that's the only part of Leno's show i look forward to. Otherwise I think he's a total ass, - That 'spinchter' one was precious. heheh. favourite one ever that I recall is this ad:
for toilet seat covers or lids - pic and copy reading: Available in Ass. colours. hahahah!

but to stay on topic, I did see the interview with Jenna and noticed she sure likes to cut in and talk a lot - wouldn't let Jay get in much, but that's okay with me. I think she generally conducted herself well and wasn't quite the total vacuous stupid person that I was led to believe. Kinda feel sorry for those Bush kids, actually. but don't spend much time thinking about them.

whether she wrote it or not, it is under her name

Hence, she is a writer and a published author.

32. She is an author promoting her book.
It's all about the context. She's an adult, she wrote a book, she's on a tour to sign copies and push sales. She's in the game, for whatever that's worth. Her dad is who he is, she is who she is, and though she will always be his daughter, she is also her own person with an identity of her own. I think that the issue of "distancing" isn't relevant here.
