Conyers Throws Cold Water on Cheney Impeachment Drive
Edited on Tue Nov-06-07 04:43 PM by CorpGovActivist
I was a little bit surprised to see this from Chairman Conyers...

********************************************************
Cheney impeachment ready for a vote: To table it
by Matthew Hay Brown

<...>

House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers, whose panel has jurisdiction over impeachment proceedings, has described the impeachment effort as a potential disruption.

"If the speaker were to let this thing out of the box, considering the number of legislative issues we have pending," the Michigan Democrat told Fox News, "it could create a split that could affect our productivity for the rest of the Congress."

http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/news/politics/blog/2007/11/cheney_impeachment_ready_for_a.html
********************************************************

... has his thinking changed, or is impeachment still on the table for him?

20. I guess Ms. Umolac wasn't able to convince him.
I've never thought he was in favor of impeachment of Bush and Cheney, just that he wasn't opposed to the idea of it. I think there's people he'd like to see impeached, that he may feel he actually could build a case against, but I'm not "convinced" (to borrow his wording) that our top two on the list mirror his.

What I do think is that sometimes we've taken statements such as this one below, and put all our hope into them developing into something real.

"Conyers did not announce plans to begin impeachment proceedings, which he has previously said would be politically untenable. Rather, his speech seemed to indicate that pro-impeachment activists did not yet convince him that Bush and Cheney deserved to be booted from office. A Conyers spokesman did not immediately respond to RAW STORY's request for clarification of the congressman's comments.

"I want you to know that I have no reticence, no reluctance, no hesitation to use the tool of impeachment ... whenever I feel that it is appropriate," Conyers said. "I only wish that I could be moved by a lot of people coming to my office."

"Go against King George? Found our own sovereign nation? Ehh, I don't know. Taxation isn't really that high. And we don't have as well trained of an army. Besides, we could be hanged just for talking like this. Let's wait another ten years, I'm sure the British Empire will crumble of it's own accord by then. Now is just not a good time."

47. Yeah, I hope so too. I really do.
I have great faith in Mr. Conyers, but it's often hard to be convinced the 'wheels of justice' are moving forward at all.

I also worry that the Republican game plan for 2008 is to foster the idea that the Democrats are useless, even with their majority. Alienate voters who would otherwise come out to vote for Democratic candidates.

54. On "Hard Ball" tonight the MSNBC Shill Reporter repeated the DU meme that Conyers was warned by
Pelosi that "Impeachment is Off Table" and that Conyers only got his Chairmanship of the Committee because he agreed to Nancy's view." He wasn't quite that blunt...but between the lines...it's what I heard "memed on DU."

I don't believe it. I think it's spin at this point because I'm so sick of both sides spinning...and I think there are some GOOD FOLKS IN OUR HOUSE AND SENATE...still there. Do I think they are Compromised? YES...but I do think what went on today was "behind the scenes" and not what's being REPORTED in the "M$M" or on the LIBERAL BLOGS.

My gut tells me something else went on that is being conveniently spun from both sides so that the "masses" will not know. It might be good...or Dark...I'm just thinking there's something they don't want us to know YET.... So it might be working behind scenes that they just can trust anyone to tell about it...because they are working against the Darkest Forces we've seen.

Might just be my eternal optimism that we aren't TOTALLY LOST YET..here.. whatever.
