The RW view on Puerto Rico becoming a state (and proof the RWers are crazy)
From the Eagle Forum:

If Puerto Rico were added as a U.S. state:

* The U.S. would transform, overnight, into a bilingual nation. Puerto Ricans do not speak English, the language of our U.S. Constitution and founding documents. The Washington Times article, "Puerto Rican statehood," analyzes all the implications of adding a foreign language-speaking state to the Union.

* It would bring immediate demands for massive federal spending. The average income of Puerto Ricans is less than half that of our poorest state, and infrastructure and the environment are far below American standards.

* Puerto Rico is already a democracy. Despite the deceptive title of the bill, Puerto Rico already has an elected government and exists as a self-governed commonwealth of the U.S.

* Statehood would give Puerto Rico more congressional representation than 25 of our 50 states! It would inevitably give Democrats two additional U.S. Senators and 6 to 8 additional Members of the House.

These people are friggin nuts. Also so paranoid you gotta wonder how they work up the nerve to leave the house every day.

2. They are just full of fear
They are afraid of terrorists and anyone who doesn't speak English. And they are afraid of poor people and Democrats too.

And if you want them to have a heart attack, just whisper the word "LIBERAL" LOL

5. There's a substantial cadre of people who live in PR and strongly oppose statehood, too.
There are a shitload of pharmaceutical companies located there. They're "US Lite" you see. There are unfavorable tax implications for the wealthy to statehood, as well.

The infrastructure and environment are below US standards, that's true. If you have any money you send your kids to private school--and I'm not talking a LOT of money, either.

The language business would end up in a pissing contest.

The real big fear of PUERTO RICANS is that we make peace with Cuba. They fear that might be the end of them, truly, and would have a strongly negative impact on their economy, as those Cubans would work longer, harder, and for less. The ones screaming about staying on a hardline with Cuba are, often as not, rich-ass Puerto Ricans--or Cubans who have settled in, and PROSPERED in, PR.

7. I know you all know this, but this lie makes me so angry I am choking
"Puerto Ricans do not speak English" Lie. Lie. Lie. Lie. Lie.

In grammar school, Puerto Ricans are taught English. Those who don't use it, lose it (what else is new?). Those who do use it, keep it.

10. Point by point:
1) So what? The US already is/is becoming a bilingual nation. Cry me a river, knuckle-dragger. Fact is, you have more income potential if you speak more than one language. If you're a "free market capitalist" you'll appreciate this fact and seek to profit from it.

2) Laughably false. If you take into account cost of living, you'll find that Puerto Rico is no more "poor" than many other areas of the US. Additionally, PR already receives federal tax dollars, as do all other self-governing US territories which have been granted "commonwealth" status.

3) And? There is no point to be made here, aside from the fact that PR can (and frequently DOES) vote on beginning the process to be included as a state, and has never chosen to do so by a majority of it's citizens.

4) Read the constitution, idiot. All states are guaranteed representation. In the Senate they may elect 2 members, and in the House of Representatives, their contribution is based upon population. The fact that PR has a higher population than some other states means that they (if statehood is ever granted) will receive similar & equal representation.

Christ! This is 8th Grade Civics. The fact that someone took the time to post such a misinformed screed speaks volumes about the IQ of the poster.
