California GOP Front Group: We'll Definitely Get Electoral Vote Measure On Ballot
Looks like the GOP will suck quite a few millions out of the DEM treasury to fight this losing proposition.
Hopefully, the net effect of their misguided effort will be a million new registered Dems! That's where I would focus the counter-effort, registering more voters!

California GOP Front Group: We'll Definitely Get Electoral Vote Measure On Ballot
Eric Kleefeld - Nov 21, 2007 - http://tpmelectioncentral.com/2007/11/california_gop_front_group_well_definitely_get_electoral_vote_measure_on_ballot.php

California Counts, the Republican-led group gathering signatures for an initiative to split California's electoral votes by Congressional district, now say they are confident they'll get enough to be on the ballot.

If this initiative were to pass, it would be an enormous gift to the GOP in 2008. It could award the Republicans roughly 20 electoral votes — which would be as good as winning Ohio, and potentially swing the presidency to the Republicans in a close race.

"We're on a good pace," said Dave Gilliard, campaign manager for the group, speaking to CQ, claiming that they already have over 400,000 signatures. They need a total of 433,971 valid signatures ..............

2. Tragic, if not fatal flaws........
...in the US Constitution, which allows state legislatures to distribute electoral votes any way they please.

Unless ALL states split their votes the same way, this method is in violation of equal voting power for all.

Abolish the electoral college and its flawed method in ALL states and not just in the two or three that split the votes.

8. Arguendo, Couldn't Bush Vs. Gore overturn this? Equal protection is in the Constitution!
Not that this will pass. This is just a way to force the Dems to spend their money before 2008.

3. Well it won't count in this next election anyway even if they win
In actuality I think this is a good measure but only if applied nation wide and not as Republicans wish just in certain Democratically controlled states...

6. Won't count in this election?
Really? Better check on that.

Unless specified otherwise ballot initiatives are enacted immediately upon passage by the people.

5. I hope it does get on the ballot, then gets soundly defeated.
That will teach them a lesson.

9. What lesson. Many ballot measures are proposed without a chance of passage
Wedge issues bring out votes, for example, and are used as a tactic to alter who goes to the polls.

In this case, it is about the money it cost to oppose this, I'm sure.

7. These things show us THAT
we can not ever under estimate the republicans dirty down and slimey way of thinking. I will guarantee you anything, they have people just sitting around trying to think of ways to steal elections. How to dis-enfranchise democratic voters so the can always be in charge.

This coup they want to pull off in California shows us this. And if I read another article about this..they want to vote in June so they can use this in the next presidential election.

10. Sometimes when you are down, the full-court press makes more sense.
Given they are near 'Falwell's pit in hell' in popularity, expect even more desperate acts than before, and bigger and better crimes too!
