Give One, Get One
One learning child. One connected child. One laptop at a time.

Since November 12th, OLPC has been offering a limited-time Give One Get One program in the United States and Canada. During Give One Get One, you can donate the revolutionary XO laptop to a child in a developing nation, and also receive one for the child in your life in recognition of your contribution. Thanks to a growing interest in the program, we are extending Give One Get One until the end of the year. Through this extension, and the increasing public interest in OLPC, we hope to give many more children the opportunity to grow, explore, learn and express themselves.

1. This is an amazingly designed and very rugged machine, from its specs.
In a case built to withstand the elements (dust, rain)for children walking to school in all sorts of weather extremes, wireless networking for children in families in remote rural parts of the world.. recharchable battery via a pull-string in parts of the world with little access to electricity-- now that is green!

4. Edit: I'm wrong; in order to get a freebie, it is $400.

7. There are many problems in the developing world
The OLPC project addresses education and lack of exposure to modern technologies that can drive change. It's not supposed to end world hunger, but that doesn't make it an unworthy enterprise.

5. Don't be confused by "laptop"
The XO laptop is a very limited machine. It runs a version of Linux and has a simplified interface designed for children to use. I've encountered people who are under the impression that they can load Windows on this thing. I think Microsoft is working a version of their embedded Windows (the Windows that runs on PDAs) for this, but this machine will not support very complex applications.

The GOGO program is a good investment for people with kids of their own, Linux hackers and gadget freaks. It might be useful for students who want to write papers (in fact, it has a neat feature that allows a group to work on the same document simultaneously).

This is a great program, so I don't want to see it negatively affected by people who are disappointed when they find out that the XO isn't like (or even compatible with) any of the other laptops they're familiar with.
