Poll question: If Cheney resigns, who will bushco name as VP?
I'm actually concerned about this. Would he dare name one of the repuke front runners? Doesn't a VP who's being named as a replacement have to be confirmed?

Since it's not an election and it's an appointment. Just like Hillary couldn't be Bill's Chief of Staff (and vice versa).

Regardless, Jeb wouldn't make it through a confirmation hearing anyways. If I had to pick from that list, I might go with McCain.

The Vice Presidency is considered part of the President's cabinet. Therefore the President and VP cannot be related.

71. I've looked in various places
Wikipedia lists the VP as "Cabinet-level administration offices"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Cabinet#Current_Cabinet

The White House website lists the VP as a cabinet member
" The Cabinet includes the Vice President and the heads of 15 executive departments-the Secretaries of Agriculture, Commerce, Defense, Education, Energy, Health and Human Services, Homeland Security, Housing and Urban Development, Interior, Labor, State, Transportation, Treasury, and Veterans Affairs, and the Attorney General. Under President George W. Bush, Cabinet-level rank also has been accorded to the Administrator, Environmental Protection Agency; Director, Office of Management and Budget; the Director, National Drug Control Policy; and the U.S. Trade Representative."

http://www.whitehouse.gov/government/cabinet.html

Most anything I can find, does list the VP as part of the cabinet. But especially in this case, Bush would be appointing Jeb as a VP. I think that would fall right in line with the Anti-Nepotism Law.

36. The House actually has to vote on it as well--it's a curious little quirk, that.
The Twenty Fifth Amendment applies. http://www.senate.gov/artandhistory/history/common/briefing/Vice_President.htm

Finally, after the death of President John F. Kennedy in 1963 and the resulting vice-presidential vacancy, Congress debated what became the second constitutional amendment related to the structure of the vice-presidency. In 1967, the Twenty-fifth Amendment, addressing presidential vacancy and disability, became part of our Constitution. The absence of any provision for filling a vice-presidential vacancy had become intolerable in the nuclear age. Added impetus for the change came from a growing public concern at the time about the advanced ages of President pro tempore Carl Hayden, who was eighty, and House Speaker John W. McCormack, who was seventy-six.

The amendment states that the president may appoint a vice president to fill a vacancy in that office, subject to approval by both houses of Congress.

Before a decade had passed, the provision was used twice, first in 1973 when President Nixon appointed Gerald R. Ford to replace Spiro Agnew, who had resigned, and again in 1974, with the appointment of Nelson Rockefeller after Nixon himself resigned and Ford became president. The amendment also sets forth very specifically the steps that would permit the vice president to serve as acting president if a president becomes "unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office." Each of these changes further reflected the increased importance of the office.

Bush family hedges its bets for 2008
By Alexander Bolton
March 26, 2007

Much of Jeb’s inner circle has picked Romney. The list includes Sally Bradshaw, who served as Gov. Bush’s campaign manager in 1994 and 1998 and as his first gubernatorial chief of staff; Ann Herberger, who was the governor’s campaign finance director; and Mandy Fletcher, who recently headed Bush’s think tank, Foundation for Florida’s Future, and worked on his reelection. In addition, Alan Philp, Bush’s former policy director, is coordinating policy and issues for Romney.

Jeb Bush’s former lieutenant governor Toni Jennings, Al Cardenas, who served as Florida GOP chairman under Jeb, David Griffin, who headed Jeb’s second -term transition office and was the Florida Lottery Secretary, Sherri McVay, executive director of Jeb’s statewide advocacy council, and Kristy Campbell, the former governor’s press secretary, are all playing roles in Romney’s campaign.

The GOP would like nothing more than to have a martyr AND a sympathy vote for the VP/candidate in the election. The BEST chance they have in 2008 would be if Junior was assassinated. (Their 2nd best chance is Hillary.)

I think Cheney will have to be carried out feet first, either when his pump stops or when they try to hold the White House past inauguration day.
If Junior is left with the task of selection, it'll be a non entity. He cares only about himself, not the Republican Party, and won't want to be upstaged by anyone with a real heart or brain.
