elections Board OKs GOP loyalty oath for presidential primary

11/27/2007

By BOB LEWIS / Associated Press

Voters in Virginia's Feb. 12 Republican presidential primary will have to sign an oath swearing loyalty to the eventual GOP ticket.

The State Board of Elections on Monday approved a state Republican Party request that all who apply for a GOP primary ballot first vow in writing to vote for the Republican presidential nominee next fall.

1. How can that be enforced?
Unless they don't have a secret ballot, how would the GOP know who anyone voted for?

2. I do not think its enforcable.
However just the fact they would want an oath is a good thing. For us that is.
The over reach I think is going to send slews to the dems.

13. It can't be enforced.
I think it's great. Imagine all those signed oaths and then they lose by a landslide.

4. So you sign the stupid loyalty oath and vote another way anyhow
How the hell will they know? Hmm? Or are they acknowledging that they have a way of checking up on people?

Completely ignoring, of course, the fact that this practice is blatantly anti-democratic and un-American in the first place, which alone should cause outrage.

15. exactly.
There will be some voters who will misconstrue it as a legal obligation not to switch parties or even vote across party lines.

You don't have to be smart to vote.

5. Forget enforceable, how can this be legal?
It is a direct violation of the fundamental principles of a free election to require any participant to commit to a candidate. Period, end of discussion. If this is allowed to stand, what prevents the Ruling Party from saying that any voter anywhere in the country must sign a loyalty oath to the Ruling Party if they want to vote?

8. Republican Party ==> Communist Party
Obviously they have found considerable inspiration in the political techniques of the old Soviet Union. Vladimir Lenin would smile approvingly upon their tactics. I like pointing this kind of stuff out to my Republican friends down here in Georgia and adding a riff something like this:

"Frankly, I think they are really just a bunch of puke gutted ass hole sucking Bolshevik Reds. Commies intent on resurrecting the U.S.S.R. by undermining the American economy, shredding the Constitution, and pissing all over traditional American values. They've gotten us mired in exactly the kind of conflict that drained the Russkis dry, and they've even sold out CIA agents. Fuckin' Commie bastard traitor symps."

I love watching their heads explode right about that time ...
