More than 540 firearms seized in statewide crackdown,
More than 540 firearms seized in statewide crackdown, AG says

California Attorney General Jerry Brown says authorities have seized more than 540 guns in recent months as part of a statewide crackdown on convicted felons and others banned from owning firearms.
Brown announced Monday that sweeps conducted by state and local law enforcement since June targeted about 1,000 illegal gun owners.

He says the owners had purchased the guns legally. But they were later barred from owning guns because they were convicted of various felony and misdemeanor crimes or found to be mentally illl.

Everything from handguns to assault rifles were seized around the state.

The owners were identified through a state database that matches criminal histories with gun ownership registries. Authorities plan to investigate about 9,000 others.

Crime rates must be low.

1. I can see felony
and mental health problems but why would you lose your guns for a misdemeanor? It seems like you can't hardly move without commiting a misdemeanor these days unless you tiptoe through everything. A misdemeanor speeding charge for instance.

2. Good catch
I understand it is about prevention, somehow, the entire story just strikes me as odd.

3. I have no idea what disqualifications CA goes by...
but under federal law, a person found guilty of any misdemeanor charge where the sentence could carry a jail term of more than two years
(whether actually imposed or not), is disqualified from purchasing and/or possessing a firearm.

Any misdemeanor domestic violence conviction is also a disqualifier.

4. Thanks
I had no idea. So there is a list of misdemeanors that qualify for this inability to own guns then.

5. There is no list per say.
It would depend on the state and which misdemeanors carry a sentence of greater than two years.

6. Writing a bad check to a restaurant in Florida...
is grounds for revocation of your right to own a gun, for the rest of your life. So is downloading music from peer-to-peer networks, probably. Anything punishable by more than one year, even if you only get a $25 fine.

7. Aren't bad checks first discussed between the two parties?
Why would any sane business person automatically chose legal action when doing so may cost them a customer?

8. Florida has a statute that makes writing a bad check to a restaurant (specifically)...
punishable by a year in jail. I would hope that to be convicted, you would have to show that you knowingly wrote it, rather than just bouncing it. But it's one of those wierd statutes.

9. Maybe it´s a statistical trick
maybe one household had 540 guns and the other 999 suspects had none?

BTW, how can 1000 illegal gun owners only have a total of 540 guns?
