Leahy, Specter to Mukasey: We're Gonna Be All Up in Your Grill about Torture-Tapes Investigation
By Spencer Ackerman - December 11, 2007, 9:52AM
You didn't think there'd be a scandal involving the destruction of potential evidence of torture without Pat Leahy and Arlen Specter getting involved, did you?

Leahy and Specter, the leaders of the Senate Judiciary Committee, wrote yesterday to Attorney General Michael Mukasey requesting a thorough understanding of the Justice Department's inquiry into the CIA's destruction of secret interrogation tapes. If Mukasey ever had a honeymoon at DoJ, it's already a distant memory.

The Dyspeptic Duo demand to know what the Justice Department knew about the tapes before their destruction -- after all, DoJ warned against junking them, so someone at DoJ knew they existed. And in a press release accompanying the letter, they threaten to turn next week's confirmation hearing for Mukasey's would-be deputy, Mark Filip, into "a public forum for Senators to query Filip about the Department of Justice’s reported investigation."

Full text of the letter follows the jump.

Here's the Leahy/Specter letter to Mukasey.

Another "strongly worded letter" from chairman Leahy. That'll make him jump, huh.

3. The "Justice Department " is nothing more than the White House maid staff
This investigation needs to be undertaken by an independent prosecutor, and subpoenas need to be enforced after they are blocked or ignored, which they will be.

4. I really want all of the investigations to go forward,
but until they start dragging these criminals off to jail it seems to have no point. Yes, * will pardon them, but at least congress will have performed their duty and it will further expose this crime cartel for what they are. If at the end of the day the people reject the congressional action and embrace the repubs again, there is nothing that can be done about that. Some times you get what you deserve (even if a lot of us don't really deserve it). Sorry, sometimes I ramble.

6. Hasn't there been plenty of time to destroy the photos from Abu Grieb
Edited on Tue Dec-11-07 11:52 AM by havocmom
From the letter:

"We were alarmed to learn of the existence of these videotapes only after they were destroyed, and to learn of the destruction of the tapes so long after the fact."

Yeah, these Senators who hold some of the most important committee posts there are would never have dreamed, in a million years, that sessions of interrogation would be taped so that any information gleaned could be analyzed seven ways to Sunday. Right. We buy that one. Sure we do.

But, about those photos the malAdministration was supposed to release.... Are they hoping it's been so long that we will forget they knew about those? Counting on the ADD of the general population so they can say 'ah, shucks, if we'd only known about those photos before they were destroyed...'

Collaborators! Enablers! Retire them all.

edited cuz my typo-isms get worse as I get madder
