KHSD approves revised 'In God We Trust' poster
(Kern County, CA)
It was out with the old and in with the new Monday as the Kern High School District attempted to address actions that one couple said violated law. The board retracted its Nov. 5 vote, which ushered in a newly designed "In God We Trust" poster that citizens had neither seen nor had the ability on which to comment.
Janelle Blanton Wilcox, president of the El Tejon Bakersfield parlor of the Native Daughters of the Golden West, listens to the public comments at the meeting Monday. She was one of two persons who spoke in support of the document.
It then, having allowed for public remarks, approved in a 4-1 vote essentially the same poster with a few content corrections.
"I believe this board met all of its obligations under the state's open meeting laws but I am concerned the public perceives its voice was not heard," said new board President Bryan Batey.
This revote, however, was not enough to correct the actions Michael and Jessica Korcok believe violated a California open-meeting law called the Brown Act.
