In "Front-runners" profile of Edwards, four Wash. Post pieces mentioned expensive haircuts
http://mediamatters.org/items/200712110005?f=h_top

Summary: In its "Front-runners" package on John Edwards, The Washington Post published four pieces that each highlighted the cost or "expensive" nature of Edwards' haircuts. The media have extensively scrutinized Edwards' haircuts, his North Carolina estate, and his work as an adviser to a hedge fund, often baselessly suggesting that they conflict with his anti-poverty campaigning.

It even stirs the pot here.

4. Regardless of one's current financial status, it's doesn't necessarily translate into
what they would or would not do for the less fortunate in our country. I believe John Edwards when he says he'll fight for the poor. I think.

It's just hard to identify with someone with a 28,000 square foot house, and who spends $400 on a haircut. It is so far removed from who we are as a people, it's difficult to understand how someone like that can identify with US. I think that's why these issues keep being brought up.

6. he can identify with US because he hasn't forgotten
what its like to be poor. things like that you don't forget. even those who live paycheck to paycheck wouldn't forget what its like to live that way even if they had the money. my mother was fairly well off until she died. i supported her as did one of my other siblings (there were 6 of us...the rest couldn't be bothered), but she never forgot the depression & how one had to live back then. i'm sure the Edwards family hasn't forgotten either.

5. It's not baseless to suggest that his work/investing with
a hedge fund, conflicts with his anti-poverty message. And it's not baseless to suggest that his call for Americans to sacrifice in the name of the environment and give up SUVs conflicts with his building a 28,000 sq ft house. Haircuts? *shrug*.
