It's 8:00 a.m. here in sunny Pasadena, California - LET THE PARADE BEGIN!

1. And with the stealth warplanes, the parade starts.
And the crowd cheers. No bomber this year. Just fighter planes.

4. Did the Queen just stomp on her tiara?
as she passed Rodin's The Thinker at the Norton Simon Museum of Art, she suddenly stands, rips the jeweled crown off her coif, tosses it on the deck and crushes it with a fierce heel stomp and a loud "Hay-yah! F*ck Turkey!"

Hometown pride! This is one of only six self-built floats this year. Our volunteers never disappoint.

(This float goes up about four blocks from my place. It's fascinating to watch the process.)

31. Wow. That was short.
Under two hours total.

If anyone planned to follow the parade in protest, they sure got lost in the crowd evacuating the bleachers.

I'm curious to know - there were supposed to be spontaneous protest "events" along the parade route - not just in front of the cameras at Orange Grove and Colorado. Any news?

have been at the end of the parade every year I can remember, even from my childhood, and I'm over 40.

I was hoping some better freaks, like maybe the protest zombies or something else in costume (since fabulous costume would go otherwise unnoticed then and there.) Sigh.

35. So this seemed more equestrian and Western than
previous parades. There was also very little international participation than in the past other than the Chinese presence. I'm surprised the Saudi family didn't have a float.

The weather was pleasant however.

42. It was like they were being used for filler for the lack
of float entries. It seems we are being boycotted by the international community that formerly had entries. I wonder why? :sarcasm:

If the Saudi float had belly dancers, it could be fun.

There were only six self-built ones which seems like half as many as usual.

There were years in the early 90's when there were over 100 floats.
