If Science Can Create Meat In A Lab Without Killing An Animal - Would Vegetarians Eat It?
Like, if scientists could creat a perfectly formed rib-eye steak or a chicken breast, without actually having to create an animal to kill and then turn into that meat by-product, would that be an end-around to one of the central tenants of vegetarianism - that killing animals for food is wrong?

1. Odds that most vegetarians would eat "lab-grown frankenfood?" Not high.

2. I say we kill and eat vegans
we're just fattening them up for the big economic collapse and oil wars like on "The Road Warrior."

3. I'm a vegetarian...
and the smell and taste of meat in undesirable to me. So I wouldn't be interested in eating lab-grown meat.

5. Someone at Wired had the same as I did and proposed fields of veal.
Edited on Wed Jan-16-08 10:48 PM by IanDB1
My idea was genetically modified pumpkins growing veal.

Somewhere in the DU archives, I posted this-- pre-dating Wired.

You couldn't grow beef-- beef is meat that's walked around a little. But you could grow veal. Veal doesn't exercise.

And it's delicious.

Too delicious to waste on "veal patties" of breadcrumbs and baby cow eyeballs and crap.

But if you go to Sammy's Restaurant on the lower East Side of Manhattan...

If only it were grown in a cruelty-free pumpkin patch.

I'd eat it every day until my colon shut down.

6. hey, but you are killing a steak-sized amount of animal - which begs the question...
how much animal before it becomes murder? A breakfast steak's worth... okay, but rack of lamb?? I don't think so! :P

8. It was done centuries ago
charcoal grilled BBQ tempeh and tofu. Comes damned close.

I'm not a vegan anymore, but I once was

Of course, it doesn't compare with ribs cooked the same way.

Which is why I'm vegan no more

16. Blech. That sounds awful.
I'm a vegetarian and don't eat meat largely because I don't like it. However, the way we raise meat is gross and a close second reason I don't eat it. Meat grown in a lab sounds, just, nasty.

20. No, I wouldn't
because the taste of meat is repugnant to me. I never liked meat even before I became "aware" I just could never abide it. :puke:

21. I've lost my taste for the stuff and honestly, it holds no appeal anymore.
Plus it would still be unhealthy as hell.

But, knock yourself out. I'm all for any technology that would ease cruelty and (hopefully) aid the environment.
