19. Yeah, I would... true story...
Edited on Tue Jan-22-08 01:13 PM by radfringe
over 10 years ago a friend of mine plunked two plastic lawn rabbits on my porch as a joke....

this spawned the LAWN ORNAMENT WARS of 1994.. there was only one rule - if you removed any item, you lose...

I called her plastic rabbits and planted a Gnome pushing a wheelbarrow on her front lawn

she retailiated with a 1/2 dozen plastic whirly-gig sunflowers one evening while we were away

I followed up by attaching a large plastic Santa to her mailbox at the end of her driveway (didn't matter that it was only the 4th of July at the time)

Next she snuck over while I was working and hung easter eggs and bunnies from the trees

My response was a tasteful statue of the Madonna in a 1/2 bathtub grotto, surrounded by tires painted white

I came home from doing grocery shopping to find a big blow-up balloon type snowman at the end of my driveway...

I knew she expected a immediate retailiation, so I decided to lay low and take my time... I bought a spider and bat halloween decoration, which you would fill with newspaper or leaves and plunk it on the lawn. The spider had a 10 foot leg span, the bat was almost as large.

As it was as thanksgiving - it got darker sooner. Time for night operations. I waited down the road and watched the house, waiting for the lights to go off. Carried the pieces to the edge of the woods and put them together as much as I could from that spot.

Finally, the lights were off, and I knew she was in the den on the computer or had gone to bed. Time to move out.
In about 15 minutes I had assembled the spider across her porch, so you would have to climb over and through it to get out that door. Across the back door, I hung the bat - making it difficult to exit from that one too.

she surrendered the next morning

33. I've recently started to sign off with "Stay together. Take care of each other".
Edited on Tue Jan-22-08 03:09 PM by sfexpat2000
And, I've no idea why. As an intuitive type, I usually speak or write first and then go back to see what it meant.

Some people say intuition is like thinking without the thinking. I believe it's like the thinking without the burden of taking the most circuitous way to a conclusion.

I'm not interested in much lately but how we do this round is very interesting. The two so called "front runners" are obviously bought and paid for by those whose interests are not ours, if I can use the plural. Either of them can win, no doubt, but both of them will owe their office long before they are sworn in.

John Edwards is the least compromised in our reflexively compromising "pay to play" system. (Yes, I know, faint praise but I've listened to many politicians.) He is also the candidate that has directly engaged the vampirism of the Beltway class in an effective way. (Peace, Dennis, my heart is always with you.)

I've spent most of the last decade fighting poverty and disenfranchisement in my community. Clinton and Obama may have seen poverty on their way home through a car window but they don't know it. They don't know the wages of poverty or its huge cost in every possible register.

They never will and have no need to know it. And, unless you really know the daily numbing fear of poverty, you cannot appreciate the middle class. Because what is the middle class except the huge relief from that daily, grinding fear.

And without that most basic understanding of the great cost of poverty or the most basic appreciation of the middle class, they cannot be good leaders. They can be good American Idol candidates but they cannot be real leaders in our ever more strapped and strip mined country.

Go, John and Elizabeth.

Let's stay together. Let's take care of each other.

Beth

48. Did you see MLK III's letter to Edwards?
January 20, 2008

The Honorable John R. Edwards
410 Market Street
Suite 400
Chapel Hill, NC 27516

Dear Senator Edwards:

It was good meeting with you yesterday and discussing my father's legacy. On the day when the nation will honor my father, I wanted to follow up with a personal note.

There has been, and will continue to be, a lot of back and forth in the political arena over my father's legacy. It is a commentary on the breadth and depth of his impact that so many people want to claim his legacy. I am concerned that we do not blur the lines and obscure the truth about what he stood for: speaking up for justice for those who have no voice.

I appreciate that on the major issues of health care, the environment, and the economy, you have framed the issues for what they are - a struggle for justice. And, you have almost single-handedly made poverty an issue in this election.

You know as well as anyone that the 37 million people living in poverty have no voice in our system. They don't have lobbyists in Washington and they don't get to go to lunch with members of Congress. Speaking up for them is not politically convenient. But, it is the right thing to do.

I am disturbed by how little attention the topic of economic justice has received during this campaign. I want to challenge all candidates to follow your lead, and speak up loudly and forcefully on the issue of economic justice in America.

From our conversation yesterday, I know this is personal for you. I know you know what it means to come from nothing. I know you know what it means to get the opportunities you need to build a better life. And, I know you know that injustice is alive and well in America, because millions of people will never get the same opportunities you had.

I believe that now, more than ever, we need a leader who wakes up every morning with the knowledge of that injustice in the forefront of their minds, and who knows that when we commit ourselves to a cause as a nation, we can make major strides in our own lifetimes. My father was not driven by an illusory vision of a perfect society. He was driven by the certain knowledge that when people of good faith and strong principles commit to making things better, we can change hearts, we can change minds, and we can change lives.

So, I urge you: keep going. Ignore the pundits, who think this is a horserace, not a fight for justice. My dad was a fighter. As a friend and a believer in my father's words that injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere, I say to you: keep going. Keep fighting. My father would be proud.

Sincerely,

Martin L. King, III

That's the best part about growing, stretching, and meeting new people with belief systems other than our own: I even like many smokers, and will stand outside with them while they get their fix, as long as they don't complain when I slurp my java, protecting the coffee with wary eye to any would-be cupsnatchers.
