Time to stop grousing and bitching and all the fatalism.

It's our country and fuck them if they are going to turn it into the bastard child of Russia and WalMart.

20. It's too late
Our only hope is secession, revolution or emigration. I don't care which, any of them are preferable to the status quo which is a fact for at least another 4 years.
Maybe it's time to start forming left wing militias. Pass the ammo!

28. But the public will do nothing
As long as we have bread and circuses, they'll stay asleep. And with Hillbama, what public opinion thinks means jack shit. They won't listen to us unless we come with a big fat check.

31. "If there was hope, it must lie in the proles..."
"...because only there, in those swarming disregarded masses, 85 percent of the population of Oceania, could the force to destroy the Party ever be generated...

The proles, if only they could somehow become conscious of their own strength, would have no need to conspire. They needed only to rise up and shake themselves like a horse shaking off flies...

Surely sooner or later it must occur to them to do it?"

The most we can hope for with them is that they won't move further right. But they won't move left either. They'll just maintain the status quo for their corporate paymasters.

25. really? I don't see it
There will be some sort of Universal health coverage--unthinkable 20 years ago.

There will be some sort of gun restriction bill.

When Obama or Clinton win, Supreme Court and federal court nominees will not be nominated unless they're pro-choice and left of center in their politics.

Explain to me again how this country is permannently shifting right?

27. As long as we have warrantless surveillance, no habeas corpus
Guantanamo and torture, universal health coverage and Obama or Clinton's nominees for the federal and Supreme Courts are meaningless. And has either Obama or Clinton proposed legislation that would restore our civil rights in the areas I mentioned? Not yet, although they are in the position to do so. And just watch, now that Edwards is out of the campaign, the Democrats in Congress will "cooperate" and pass telecom immunity and more warrantless wiretapping. They are just waiting until they can do it under the radar.

Leahy is in charge of the Judicial Committee, but has never investigated what happened to the investigation of the attempt on his own life via the mailing of anthrax. He's made of the same stuff as Clinton and Obama.

but I still think the Patriot Act and warrantless surveillance will go away, maybe not right away, but with the appointment of...progressive judges and a Democratic party presidency and congress.

30. Universal health care may have been unthinkable 20 years ago,
but it was not unthinkable 35 years ago. Nixon, of all people proposed it. It was killed because it was not seen as good enough then - even though it was comparable, or even to the "left" of anything proposed now. So we are still, as I see it further to the right as a nation than we were 35 years ago.

32. In my opinion, it's pretty much over.
Real progressive change is not going to happen, at least not in my lifetime. I mean we can't even get behind a progressive candidate on this supposedly progressive site so there's little hope for getting one nationwide.

38. America hasn't moved. Just the political parties
Repubs fight to the bitter end for their right wing principles, misguided as they are.

On the other hand, Dems have been pragmatic to the point of nothingness. We allowed the GOP to accomplish all that they have.

History will remember that when America needed the Dems most, our party leadership could not muster the courage to stand strong for what was right.
