ATLANTA (Reuters) - Up to 100 people were injured in an explosion at a sugar refinery in the U.S. state of Georgia, the Savannah-Chatham police department said.

The explosion in a building at the Imperial Sugar Co plant in Port Wentworth, a suburb of the historic city of Savannah, occurred at around 8 p.m. local time (0100 GMT), police said, adding that the cause of the blast was not known.

"There were 50 to 100 casualties," police captain Ben Herron said. He gave no further details.
