1. Someone from TX (Stark, I think) proposed an amendment
Edited on Wed Feb-13-08 04:29 PM by jtrockville
to allow telecom immunity. Conyers objected, saying it was against house rules because the original legislation extended current law (no changes), so an amendment that changes the law can't be introduced. Whoever the person is who runs things read the law and agreed with Conyers. Stark asked for an appeal. Conyers proposed to table the appeal. The aye's had it. Stark asked for a vote.

Now they're voting.

(just my take - I may have misunderstood)

2. I think that the House shot down the permanent extension of FISA's
spy power. They voted to give it 3 more weeks of debate.

Chimpy lost.

Please someone correct and clarify further.

11. methinks they only want to put off giving immunity until the dust has settled a bit
knowing full well today there will be an uproar if they do, a couple three weeks from now who knows how the winds will blow. I have totally given up on our congresscritters doing the right thing ever again.

19. I am also a little skeptical.
We haven't heard Pelosi weigh in yet. On the other hand we could all use some good news.

7. Background here.
http://dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/2/13/134654/941/584/456059

House Republicans engineered a series of procedural votes Wednesday in a bid to derail the Democrats’ prooposed extension, which President Bush said Wednesday he would veto. They argued that the House should simply take up and send to the White House a surveillance overhaul bill (HR 3773) that the Senate passed by 68-29 Tuesday.

Because 21 conservative Blue Dog Democrats have endorsed the Senate-passed bill, Republicans might be able to win approval of the Senate bill through a motion to recommit the extension with instructions to amend it with the text of the Senate bill.

12. There's the list.
Every single one of these people needs to be voted out of office in November, preferably in favor of a "real" Democrat.

What are the constituents of these traitors doing that's more important than calling, writing and faxing to stop this atrocity?

22. I agree.
I used to give them the benefit of the doubt, thinking we needed them to uphold our majority. Now, I see that, because of them, our majority is useless. I think the real Dems would be more powerful with a small, unified minority than the majority we have now.

13. Which means everyting is back to square 1, with 2 different versions going to Conference.
The house (non-immunity) version and the Senate (immunity granted) version.

The only way the American people win is if it is the non-immunity verstion goes forward.

14. I don't hold out much hope for the House version, honestly.
If there are 21 House Dems ready to help seal the deal and pass the Senate version already, expect another handful to cross over.

In short, we're sca-rewed.

15. Its hard to keep up
but I know two things for sure I am sick and tired of traitorous Dem's voting with the RePukes. I am absolutely sick of hearing the RePukes on the House and Senate floor lying their asses off in support of torture and giving the telecoms immunity for their law breaking.
