Al Gore Fans - Please Get Your Facts Straight
I'm an Al Gore supporter, and I sincerely hope he runs for and wins the Presidency again. However, please don't make misrepresentations of his achievement.

The movie "An Inconvenient Truth" was based upon Mr. Gore's slide show. It was a documentary that although about him and his principals, was not technically his own.

In short, HE did not win the Oscar. It belongs to the creators of the film, including primarily Davis Guggenheim. As Davis announced at the podium, "We share this award with you," which he said to Mr. Gore. Because although he obviously was the reason for the film, the film industry was awarding the movie and it's creators.

I'll probably get attacked for not understanding the connection, but I do. It's just the way the Oscar award works. I don't believe he'll get his own award, but I could be wrong. I'm pretty sure the reason he was at the ceremony was because Davis specifically invited him as his guest, since otherwise he would not have been considered a "nominee."

Anybody who wants to dispute me, please feel free.

2. Al Gore And His Slideshow Is What Made The Film. Though Technically You Are Correct, In Spirit You
are not.

Al Gore IS that movie. Without him, there would be no award. Like I said, though technically you are right, in practical sense that award is every bit as much a tribute to him as it is to anyone else. I hope you realize that.

This was about Al, period.

5. Yes, you're quite correct.
He was part of a team, and he did great work. They share in the achievement, but the producers and production people had a vision to bring this film to us, and did. It is a wonderful thing to witness.

Obviously, his was the guiding spirit behind and around the whole project. It doesn't really matter whose name is on the statue -- what matters if the perception of widespread acceptance of something so vital and important.

10. Does the Oscar for Documentary go to the producer or director?
I do know Best Pic goes to producer. Wondered if it was the same for documentaries.

20. Director
The joke is it's because the producers of a documentary always quit because the director goes over budget. But in general a documentary is usually more the director's "vision" than the producers, while the opposite is often true for fiction except with the "Great" directors.

So though you are right, you are also wrong. If it's my Oscar and I announce on international television that I am sharing it with you, it becomes your Oscar too.

13. "When you're a writer, you've got the script..."
"When you're a producer, you just have the credit!"

God, I love Wag the Dog...

Anyways, you have a good point, and Hollywood is very very serious about attribution and credit, and frankly Guggenheim deserves a whole lot of props for making this -- remember this was back when * and the GOP seemed like an unstoppable juggernaut.

15. Agreed, but the public is going to blur that technical distinction while discussing
this film over the next few weeks. The media will, as well.

I'm like you, I like to be precise in my descriptions, but you know that the media and the general public will, even though many will understand it, blur that distinction. Which is good for the film's popularity, and for Gore.

is should go without saying. Al Gore doesn't make movies, that is clear. There would have been no movie if they didn't see his presentation and get the idea for the film - Laurie David's own words.

WE ARE NOT STUPID.

Of course we know the award went to the director of the documentary. Technically, it is his award. However, there would not have been a documentary without Al Gore and he was the star of the show. Unlike film features, awards for documentaries celebrate all participants. There are not separate awards for documentary cinematographers, sound mixers, etc., etc. It is a joint award and with respect to AIT, more so than most..

27. Come on, it's more than that
I mean, you still can't introduce him as "Academy Award winner Al Gore" or anything. He was the inspiration behind and focus of an Academy Award-winning documentary.

Next thing you know, the media will be saying he lied about being the inspiration behind "An Inconvenient Truth"...

28. NY Times Best Seller
Earth in Balance Ecology and the Human Spirit
Al Gore
http://books.google.com/books?id=QDbNhec98iEC&dq=al+gore+book&psp=1

"A passionate and lifelong defender of the environment, Vice President Al Gore describes in this classic best-selling book how human actions and decisions can endanger or safeguard the vulnerable ecosystem that sustains us all. The book's groundbreaking analysis helped place the environment on the national agenda, summoning politicians, the media, and the public to attention and action. The message remains just as urgent today as it did eight years ago: while much has been accomplished, we must meet a global environmental challenge that reaches into every aspect of our society. In brave and unforgettable terms, Earth in the Balance probes the roots of the environmental crisis and offers a bold and forceful vision of a new, more sustainable path. Having provoked international discussion upon its original publication, it continues to confront us with profound challenges. Human civilization must change its course if we are to heal our ailing environment and preserve the earth's ecology for future generations. Vice President Gore describes in a new foreword to this classic what we have achieved and what remains to be done, and issues a clarion call to begin the millennium with an "Environment Decade." It is time to reflect deeply on the fate of our planet and commit ourselves to its future."

As a fan of Al Gore, you should already know this.

It's sort of weird and unfair that he doesn't get anything, but I suppose the Documentary category is one which only gets 1 award, and there is no award for an "actor" like Al Gore.

He's an actor and also the reason for the film, but that is not who receives the award.

So he won't get to keep the Oscar, since it's not his. That's all I was trying to say in my post. Obviously without him, the film is not made, or possibly so well received.

I imagine the RW will spin that this was "liberal" hollywood, and not focus at all on the subject matter, or even Mr. Gore's involvement necessarily. They'll claim that it was no surprise since Hollywood is voting for "liberal" issues again.
