Frank Rich has an op-ed piece in today's New York Times that brings into focus the devastating consequences that the diversion of the Iraq war has had on our fight against terrorism.
Recent reports indicate that al Qaeda is reorganizing along the Afghanistan/Pakistan border. The Taliban has been resurgent defeating Afghan government forces and reclaiming broad swaths of the country.
And while the Bush Administration has abandoned the real war on terrorism against al Qaeda, the former head of the bin Laden unit at the CIA, Michael Scheuer, said on Keith Olberman's show last week that:
The threat to the United States, inside the United States, comes from al Qaeda. Al Qaeda is in Afghanistan and Pakistan. If you want to address the threat to America, that's where it is. . . . These people are going to detonate a nuclear device inside the United States
The British troops being withdrawn from Iraq are not heading home. They are headed to Afghanistan. Redeployment of U.S. troops is crucial right now. It is not a matter of shirking from battle. It's about finishing the job. The right job for protecting Americans from the real threat to our national security.
