With apologies to Jon Stewart...
From this morning's Salon.com article on the Oscars, this political "moment of Zen" (see bolded text below) with commentary.

Hollywood Gets Humble

Finally, there was one genuinely historic moment: Jerry Seinfeld presenting the Academy Award to Al Gore, who received an A-List standing O in front of a billion viewers. Respect for the office of the American presidency notwithstanding, it should be noted that Sunday night, Hollywood successfully Photoshopped Al Gore's foot into George W.'s ass.

The plates are shifting, people. The trend is irreversible. At this rate, Texas and the entire Republican Party will be completely underwater by 2008.

It makes a larger cultural sense, this renewed appreciation for the genuine article that these Oscars seemed to reflect.

America has been at war for four years. The big unpopular war that the president and his lockstep administration declared was against the Truth. It seems the American people are engaged in a soft revolution: We are simply refusing to get in the back of that hateful bus anymore. We just like things to be honest.

3. The Politics Spoke Above The Acceptance Speeches
BillO's gonna have to parse real hard to find some "gotcha" bits...Rushbo won't have a Michael Moore quote to blast around and Michael Medved will have to fabricate something. Damn those Hollywood "libruls"...they behaved themselves.

Sure...meanwhile the movies that won awards dealt with global warmning, genocide, social injustice and coporate greed. The message may not have been in the stage, but it sure is on the screens.

Also...in the past few years, Liberals, Progressive and other voices have been shut out of the political debate. A rubber stamp Congress, paid-for corporate media and right wing spin machine made it all but impossible for a contrary message to get out...and one of the few opportunities was when billions tuned in. Last year's election has changed things. We know we now are the majority in this country and have more voices and means to enact change. Yes, there's a long way to go, but I consider the lack of political rhetoric last night a good thing...this was a night to recognize the successes, not the failures.
