This story fascinates me in that every time it reappears in front of me it seems to have new revelations...but the end result always ends up the same. This is like the Schiavo saga in that it has lots of rightwing heavy hitters behind it but with nothing, to my eye, to stand on. Pure political hobgoblin chasing.
This is a HUGE story in the rightwing blogosphere and news machine. They want a pardon from their dear leader on this one.
This was on Lou Dobbs last night so I looked it up. Dana Rohrabacher was on (RED FLAG!) the champion the cause of the two border agents his usual cohort, Duncan Hunter, was not. O’Reilly had the DA for this case on his show the night that Colbert was on which was suprising because there doesn’t seem to be much doubt on this case.
A bad guy was caught yes but you just can’t have people being judge jury and executioner by themselves. Plus they lied and then got caught lying and covering up that lie.
A good comprehensive long article well worth the read. I can’t come close to posting a good summary in 4 paragraphs.
Behind the debate: What really happened in border shooting and agents' convictions?
http://local.lancasteronline.com/4/200813This is an AP report widely available having googled "border shooting"
http://www.charlotte.com/mld/charlotte/news/16719609.htmA jury convicted the agents of assault, obstruction of justice and civil rights violations. A federal judge meted out punishment: 12 years for Jose Alonso Compean; 11 for Ignacio "Nacho" Ramos. As the two men surrendered last month, demonstrators took to the streets, clutching U.S. flags and shrieking: "What kind of America do we have?"
The exception was the Compean-Ramos case. What set it apart, a federal prosecutor told jurors at their trial: "They knew it was a bad shoot." (See the trial transcripts here:

Retired Border Patrol agent David Ham, a former assistant chief in El Paso, trekked out to the shooting scene not long ago. He wanted to see it for himself as the national outrage grew.
"They're picking the wrong guys to make heroes," he said.
Two jurors also signed affidavits on behalf of the defense, saying they did not think Ramos and Compean were guilty of some counts on which they were convicted.
