That famous feline in a striped stovepipe hat becomes eligible for AARP this year.

Yes, "The Cat in the Hat" turns 50.

And, Seuss fans will soon have their pick of exhibits, readings, films and other tributes celebrating both the character and his creator, who were both born in March.

Children's author and Springfield native Theodor Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, would have been 103 on March 2. The Cat made his debut on March 12, 1957.

In keeping with these milestones, Random House has just released "The Annotated Cat: Under the Hats of Seuss and His Cats," an illustrated, 190-page hardback homage to "The Cat in the Hat" and its follow-up, "The Cat in the Hat Comes Back."

Also, the National Education Association is dedicating its annual Read Across America Day to "The Cat in the Hat," with a proposal that simultaneous read-alouds of the book begin at 2:36 p.m. on Friday.
